Job description

AVA Consulting is seeking a Data Engineer

Location: Austin, TX (Hybrid)

Job Description:

  • We are seeking a Contract Data Engineer to support a critical data migration initiative. The engineer will be responsible for analyzing large HDM (Hierarchical Data Models) tables, understanding their logic/code, and converting them into production-ready Data Warehouse (DW) tables. The primary objective is to decommission HDMs from our environment and ensure smooth integration into our enterprise DW platform.

Responsibilities:

  • Review and analyze existing HDM tables and associated transformation logic.
  • Re-engineer HDM structures into optimized Data Warehouse tables.
  • Design and build automated ETL/ELT data pipelines for production.
  • Document transformation processes to ensure transparency and knowledge transfer.
  • Collaborate with data architects and stakeholders to validate business requirements.
  • Ensure high data quality, consistency, and performance in migrated datasets.

Required Skills & Experience:

  • Proven experience as a Data Engineer (3 5+ years).
  • Strong SQL expertise with experience in handling large, complex data sets.
  • Hands-on experience with Data Warehousing platforms (Snowflake, Redshift, BigQuery, Teradata, or equivalent).
  • Proficiency in ETL/ELT tools (Informatica, dbt, Airflow, Talend, etc.).
  • Strong programming skills in Python/Scala/Java for data processing.
  • Experience building or contributing to REST APIs
  • Strong hands-on experience with SQL and relational databases; familiarity with NoSQL databases is a plus
  • Practical experience building, maintaining, or supporting data pipelines, ETL workflows, batch processing, or event-driven systems
  • Experience working with backend data flows, data transformation, and integration between services and data platforms
  • Familiarity with distributed systems or asynchronoevent-driven architectures is a plus
  • Solid understanding of data modeling concepts (star schema, dimensional modeling, normalization).

Nice to Have:

  • Prior experience with HDM systems and migration to modern DW.
  • Cloud platform knowledge (AWS/Google Cloud Platform/Azure).
  • Experience in documenting and handing off data migration projects.
