Generac is hiring for a Senior Mechanical Engineer with a focus on Portable Power Products. In this role you will be responsible for independently leading major subsystems or product projects and influence technical direction across cross-functional teams consisting of engineering, manufacturing operations, sourcing, quality, service, and marketing.
This role is ideally based in our Jefferson WI or optionally Waukesha WI office. Position is fulltime onsite.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Designs, validates, and brings new products, systems, and component technologies to market, owning technical execution from concept through production release related to portable generators
  • Defines functional requirements and develops optimized engineering solutions by designing, testing, integrating, and evaluating moderately complex components and systems, including assessment of performance, cost/benefit, reliability (risk analysis), and safety.
  • Plans, executes, and evaluates fitness-for-use testing and validation activities, including product specifications, process validation plans, material specifications, and bills of materials.
  • Uses CAD and CAE tools and simulations to develop and analyze designs, produce detailed engineering drawings, and assess mechanical system performance and improvement opportunities.
  • Partners cross-functionally with manufacturing, suppliers, designers, and product specialists to optimize designs for manufacturability and support new technology and product development plans related to schedule, cost, and design inputs.
  • Leads risk management activities, including development of Risk Assessments and FMEAs/DFMEAs, and provides data-driven recommendations during design reviews.
  • Oversees prototype build, testing, troubleshooting, and validation, driving corrective actions necessary to meet functional, performance, and safety requirements.
  • Investigates and resolves technical issues, independently driving root cause analysis and escalating high-risk or high-impact issues appropriately to engineering leadership.

Minimum Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline
  • 5+ years of relevant work experience
  • 2-3 years of new product development
  • Minimum of 2+ years CAD tool experience

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Experience leading front-end product investigation and system-level requirement definition for new or complex integrations.
  • Demonstrated experience in new product design and development, including design of moderately complex components and systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to execute detail-oriented work with accuracy across multiple simultaneous projects.
  • Design experience across a range of materials and manufacturing methods, including plastics, aluminum castings, and sheet metal, with working knowledge of material specifications and appropriate use.
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD modeling and engineering analysis tools, including Creo or SolidWorks.
  • Strong written, verbal, and presentation communication skills, with the ability to translate complex technical information effectively to technical and non-technical audiences, including leadership.
  • Experience with internal combustion engines and/or generator systems.
