What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a Gutenberg specialist?

To thrive as a Gutenberg specialist (WordPress block editor expert), you need strong knowledge of WordPress, Gutenberg block development, HTML/CSS/JavaScript, and experience with PHP. Familiarity with the WordPress ecosystem, modern JavaScript frameworks like React (used in Gutenberg), and version control systems like Git are typically required. Job description

Note: This is part time job role -20hrs/week-1 day a week onsite

Job Title:  WordPress Web Developer — WordPress Website Implementation

Location: Campbell, CA (Hybrid- 1 Day Onsite/Week)

Part time- 20 hrs max per week

Role Overview

We're seeking an experienced Web Developer to implement a fully functional, responsive, accessible, and maintainable website on WordPress, based on an already-approved prototype. This is an implementation and development role — not a from-scratch design engagement. The developer will translate an existing structure, navigation, and content plan into a production-ready website.

Key Responsibilities

  • Evaluate the approved prototype and implement it using a Gutenberg-compatible theme or lightweight custom block theme
  • Build reusable Gutenberg blocks, patterns, and templates (e.g., Text + Image, FAQ, Contact, Cards, Call to Action) with layout locking for design consistency
  • Configure content management components so non-technical staff can manage text, images, links, documents, FAQs, announcements, and files independently
  • Implement responsive UI/UX across desktop, tablet, and mobile
  • Implement and remediate for WCAG 2.1/2.2 accessibility (semantic HTML, heading structure, keyboard nav, focus management, contrast, alt text, accessible forms, screen-reader compatibility); conduct testing using the department's selected ADA tool
  • Configure and customize accessible web forms (validation, conditional logic, notifications, spam protection) — including forms such as Request a Program, Public Records Request, Report an Incident, Report a Safety Concern, Request an Inspection (final list TBD)
  • Configure accessible, responsive data visualizations as needed
  • Implement a scalable site search solution across pages, FAQs, resources, and PDFs
  • Optimize site performance and test across major browsers/devices
  • Follow web development security and maintainability best practices; minimize custom code and proprietary dependencies
  • Provide CMS documentation and knowledge transfer/training to internal staff
  • Coordinate with the department's technical team before implementing any new plugin, third-party service, or custom code
  • Participate in regular progress updates, technical reviews, and issue resolution

Required Qualifications

  • 3–5+ years of professional web development experience with WordPress, including implementing websites from approved prototypes/designs
  • Strong HTML/CSS; working knowledge of JavaScript and PHP
  • Demonstrated experience with the Gutenberg/Block Editor — custom reusable blocks, patterns, templates, block-based themes
  • Experience implementing responsive, user-friendly UI/UX
  • Demonstrated ADA/WCAG 2.1/2.2 accessibility implementation, testing, and remediation experience
  • Experience with WordPress form plugins (Formidable Forms, Gravity Forms, or equivalent)
  • Experience with performance optimization, cross-browser/device testing, security, and maintainable development practices
  • Experience producing technical and non-technical documentation and training non-technical staff
  • Strong communication, problem-solving, and collaboration skills
