How much do gut microbiome jobs pay per year?
What is a gut microbiome?
A Gut Microbiome job involves researching, analyzing, and applying knowledge about the microorganisms living in the human digestive system. Professionals in this field work in academia, healthcare, biotechnology, or nutrition to study how gut bacteria influence health and disease. Roles may include microbiologists, bioinformaticians, dietitians, or clinical researchers. Tasks often involve conducting experiments, analyzing microbiome data, developing probiotics, or advising on gut health interventions. This field is growing as research links the gut microbiome to digestion, immunity, mental health, and chronic diseases.
What are typical daily tasks for a gut microbiome scientist?
As a Gut Microbiome Scientist, your day-to-day responsibilities will often include designing and conducting laboratory experiments, preparing biological samples, and analyzing DNA sequencing data to study microbial populations. You may collaborate with clinicians, data scientists, or nutritionists to interpret results and develop research publications. Regular team meetings to discuss project progress and troubleshooting research challenges are also common. This role provides a balance of hands-on laboratory work and in-depth data analysis, offering opportunities for continuous learning and professional development.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the gut microbiome position, and why are they important?
To thrive as a Gut Microbiome Scientist, you need a strong academic background in microbiology, molecular biology, or a related field, often supported by a PhD or advanced degree. Familiarity with next-generation sequencing (NGS), bioinformatics tools, and laboratory information management systems (LIMS) is typically essential. Critical thinking, strong communication skills, and the ability to collaborate effectively in multidisciplinary teams are important soft skills. These competencies enable you to analyze complex microbial data, contribute to innovative research, and drive impactful discoveries in gastrointestinal health.

Job description
The Gut Microbiome Laboratory, housed within the Enteric Neurosciences Program at Mayo Clinic (Rochester, MN), is seeking a highly motivated, self-driven postdoctoral fellow to join a collaborative and translational research team focused on defining pathophysiological mechanisms underlying gastrointestinal motility disorders.
Our program represents one of the largest and most integrated groups of physicians and scientists studying the enteric nervous system and gastrointestinal physiology, with a long history of paradigm-shifting discoveries that have shaped the field. We are seeking new team members who are excited to contribute to, and extend, this distinguished tradition.
The laboratory is at the forefront of research in human neurogastrointestinal disorders, including irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). We employ an integrated experimental approach that combines physiology, advanced imaging, molecular and cellular biology, and in vivo animal models to interrogate gut-microbe-host interactions. Our work is published in high-impact journals (Gastroenterology, Cell, Cell Host & Microbe, and Science Translational Medicine) and is supported by NIH funding.
We provide extensive resources, mentorship, and a highly collaborative environment to support trainees as they advance to the next stages of their careers. We are committed to fostering a diverse, inclusive, and supportive culture, and we value community, celebrating milestones together, and creating space to recognize both scientific accomplishments and the people behind them.
Mayo Clinic is top-ranked in more specialties than any other care provider according to U.S. News & World Report. As we work together to put the needs of the patient first, we are also dedicated to our employees, investing in competitive compensation and comprehensive benefit plans - to take care of you and your family, now and in the future. And with continuing education and advancement opportunities at every turn, you can build a long, successful career with Mayo Clinic.
- Medical: Multiple plan options.
- Dental: Delta Dental or reimbursement account for flexible coverage.
- Vision: Affordable plan with national network.
- Pre-Tax Savings: HSA and FSAs for eligible expenses.
- Retirement: Competitive retirement package to secure your future.
All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, national origin, protected veteran status or disability status. Learn more about the "EOE is the Law". Mayo Clinic participates in E-Verify and may provide the Social Security Administration and, if necessary, the Department of Homeland Security with information from each new employee's Form I-9 to confirm work authorization.
Qualified candidates should hold a PhD or MD/PhD in physiology, neuroscience, molecular biology, or a related discipline and be within five years of PhD completion. This position is not intended for clinical training and is not open to MD/MBBS candidates seeking clinical roles.
Experience in advanced imaging, single-cell or spatial transcriptomics, and mouse physiological studies is highly desirable, and candidates with expertise in these areas are strongly encouraged to apply.
