Starting as a Gulfstream SIC provides a solid pathway for pilots to gain valuable experience on advanced jet aircraft, build flight hours, and develop expertise in corporate aviation operations. Many SICs progress to becoming Captain (PIC) after meeting the required flight hours and demonstration of leadership and technical proficiency. Opportunities also exist to move into chief pilot, director of operations, or training roles within flight departments or corporate flight organizations. Advancing in this career often depends on accumulated experience, strong performance, and continued professional development in the field.
A Gulfstream SIC (Second-in-Command) job refers to the role of a co-pilot on a Gulfstream aircraft, assisting the captain in flight operations, navigation, and safety procedures. SICs are responsible for supporting takeoff, landing, and in-flight management while ensuring compliance with aviation regulations. Typically, this role requires specific certifications, such as an ATP or commercial pilot’s license with appropriate type ratings. It serves as a crucial position for pilots looking to gain experience and advance to the captain’s seat.
To thrive as a Gulfstream SIC (Second in Command), a commercial pilot certificate, instrument rating, and sufficient flight hours in multi-engine and turbine aircraft are essential, often accompanied by a type rating for Gulfstream jets. Familiarity with advanced avionics, flight management systems (FMS), and compliance with FAA or relevant aviation authority regulations is required, along with recurrent training. Excellent communication, situational awareness, teamwork, and decision-making skills are critical soft skills in this high-responsibility role. These competencies ensure safety, regulatory compliance, and smooth coordination within the cockpit and with ground operations.
