Position Overview
The Metallurgist provides engineering expertise and strategic support for the efficient operation of the processing facilities. This role serves as a leader in promoting a zero‐incident safety culture within a complex, sustainable metallurgical environment. The Metallurgist monitors and analyzes plant performance to maximize production, identifies opportunities for research, new technologies, and process improvements, and delivers technical guidance to operations and support teams. The position collaborates closely with cross‐functional groups to meet production forecasts and budget targets and coordinates key activities with other mine departments as well as environmental, safety, and health teams.
Duties & Responsibilities
Assist with strategic planning, continuous improvement, and budgeting for the Department.
Assist in the development of technical, commercial, and interpersonal skills of the Departmental staff.
Exhibit safety leadership by example on and off the job.
Ensure Departmental compliance to Bunker Hill, State, and Federal safety and environmental standards and regulations.
Take immediate action to correct any substandard conditions or behaviors.
Follow up on critical tasks to reinforce safe work and operational excellence.
Recognize safe performance and investigate incidents to their root cause as necessary.
Coordinate and act as a facilitator between operations and leadership to resolve operational issues.
Provide technical support and guidance to plant operations and maintenance:
Resolve operational and technical problems.
Technical training in Operations.
Maximize the utilization of installed equipment.
Drive continuous improvement in all areas.
Routinely work with environmental and safety departments to improve plant industrial hygiene, resolve plant inspection results, and address safety issues:
HAP and environmental compliance management.
Assure integrity of solution containment and pollution control systems.
Provide operational parameters for workplace hygiene improvement projects.
Respond to / investigate significant variations from production plans.
Review and set operational parameters (operational targets).
Anticipate and resolve issues that might affect safe production and/or environmental compliance of each unit of operation.
Optimize production from each unit of operation and attain current LOM or budget plan expectations.
Position Requirements
BS degree in Metallurgy, Minerals/Chemical Engineering.
1-5 years of experience working in a mineral processing role.
Knowledge and experience in metallurgical procedures, ore characteristics, crushing, grinding, classification, material handling, flotation, dewatering, pumping.
Experience in a differential flotation operation is very advantageous and preferred.
Good understanding of reliability maintenance.
Ability to manage and support projects as needed.
Skilled with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Project, Outlook, etc.).
Experience with process control and data management software.
Effective and professional communication skills and ability to deliver clear and concise information in all forms of media.
Willingness to learn and gain strong understanding the role and how it contributes to the overall output and objectives of the business.
Focus and commitment to continuous improvement, safety, and team collaboration.
Physical Requirements
Move head and neck repeatedly in up and down, side to side motion at various times throughout shift.
Sit and turn head approximately 90 degrees to view driving direction while operating pedals with feet and steering with hands (if applicable).
Stand, walk, kneel, reach, and/or sit for extended periods of time on concrete, uneven, rock-strewn, wet, snowy, icy, muddy, slick ground or in various lighting while performing duties.
Hear, see and smell various kinds of warnings such as audible alarms, voices, hand and light signals, and stench gas (if applicable).
Wear required protective equipment including; steel toe shoes or boots, safety glasses, hard hat, and hearing protection.
Stoop, bend, twist, climb, reach, mount and dismount mining equipment using three points of contact.
Ability to read and write instructions and communicate information in one-on-one and group situations.
