What is GS Engineering?

GS Engineering typically refers to engineering roles at GS Engineering & Construction, a major South Korean company known for its work in civil engineering, construction, plant engineering, and infrastructure projects. Engineers at GS Engineering may work on large-scale projects such as bridges, highways, power plants, and industrial facilities. These roles often involve project management, design, planning, and site supervision. GS Engineering is recognized for its commitment to innovation, safety, and sustainability in the construction and engineering sectors.

What are some common challenges faced by engineers at GS Engineering and how can new team members effectively navigate them?

Engineers at GS Engineering often work on complex, multidisciplinary projects that require strong collaboration across teams, tight deadlines, and adherence to rigorous safety and quality standards. New team members may initially find it challenging to familiarize themselves with proprietary processes and integrate with established project teams. Proactively seeking mentorship, participating in cross-functional meetings, and utilizing internal knowledge-sharing resources can help new engineers quickly adapt and contribute effectively. Open communication and a willingness to ask questions are especially valued and will ease the transition into the team.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a GS engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a GS (General Schedule) Engineer, you need a strong background in engineering principles, problem-solving, and a relevant degree (such as in civil, mechanical, or electrical engineering) along with applicable licensure like a Professional Engineer (PE) certification. Familiarity with technical tools such as AutoCAD, project management software, and federal systems like the Defense Travel System (DTS) is often required. Strong analytical thinking, teamwork, and effective communication are crucial soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure engineering projects meet federal standards, are delivered efficiently, and support the mission of government agencies.

Role Overview

Goldman Sachs Asset Management’s Alternatives platform manages over $400bn across private equity, growth equity, credit, real estate, and related strategies.

Alternatives Engineering builds scalable, data‑driven, and AI‑enabled technology that supports the private‑side investment lifecycle.

Deal Manufacturing Engineering develops tooling and automation that enable deal teams to source, evaluate, structure, and execute private‑market deals across Real Estate, Credit, and Growth Equity.

Role Overview

We are seeking a Technical Vice President to join the Deal Manufacturing Engineering team within Asset Management Alternatives Engineering. This role has direct accountability for the design, delivery, and evolution of core platforms supporting private‑side deal origination, diligence, and execution across Real Estate, Credit, and Growth Equity.

As a Vice President, you will serve as a technical owner for key components of the Deal Manufacturing platform — setting architectural direction, leading complex initiatives end‑to‑end, and ensuring solutions meet Goldman Sachs’ standards for scalability, resiliency, security, and risk management. You will remain hands‑on while partnering closely with Product, business stakeholders, and engineering teams across Alternatives, and mentoring engineers in line with GS engineering standards.

AI at Goldman Sachs (and in this role)

Goldman Sachs is investing heavily in AI‑enabled engineering and business productivity. Within Deal Manufacturing Engineering, AI and LLMs are applied to real production workflows — accelerating development, improving platform quality, and enabling smarter solutions for investors and deal teams.

In this role, you will be expected to practically apply LLMs within engineering workflows and production systems. Hands‑on experience using LLMs to build and operate large‑scale applications is a strong plus.

What You’ll Do
  • Own the architecture and technical direction for large‑scale, mission‑critical Deal Manufacturing platforms
  • Design and deliver production‑grade full‑stack applications using Java, TypeScript, and Python
  • Build scalable backend services and APIs, and modern web UIs using frameworks such as React or Angular
  • Apply AI and LLM capabilities to enhance engineering efficiency and business productivity where appropriate
  • Lead complex initiatives end‑to‑end in an Agile environment, from design through production
  • Partner closely with Product, business stakeholders, and other engineering teams across Alternatives
  • Mentor engineers, lead code and design reviews, and reinforce GS engineering standards
  • Champion operational excellence, including CI/CD, testing, and platform reliability
What We’re Looking For

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience
  • 5–8 years of software engineering experience, including technical leadership on complex systems
  • Strong hands‑on experience with Java, TypeScript/JavaScript, and Python
  • Proven experience building scalable, distributed systems, APIs, and microservices
  • Experience developing modern web applications (React, Angular, or similar)
  • Strong communication skills and ability to partner effectively with business stakeholders

Strong Plus / Preferred

  • Hands‑on experience using LLMs to build and operate production‑scale applications
  • Experience applying AI to improve engineering efficiency or business productivity
  • Cloud experience (AWS preferred), with Docker and Kubernetes
  • Experience with Spring Boot, Node.js, Kafka, or event‑driven architectures
  • Background in financial services, private markets, or platform modernization efforts
