What is gRPC?

gRPC is an open-source remote procedure call (RPC) framework developed by Google. It enables communication between applications or services, regardless of their programming languages, by using HTTP/2 for transport and Protocol Buffers (protobufs) for efficient serialization of messages. gRPC is commonly used to build scalable, high-performance microservices and distributed systems. Its features include bidirectional streaming, authentication, and pluggable support for load balancing and tracing.

What is a gRPC developer?

A gRPC job typically involves working with gRPC, an open-source RPC framework developed by Google. Professionals in this field design, implement, and maintain gRPC-based communication between microservices or distributed systems. The role often requires expertise in protocol buffers, service definitions, and optimizing network communication for performance and scalability.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a gRPC developer?

To thrive as a gRPC Developer, you need strong programming skills (often in languages like Go, Java, or Python) and a solid understanding of distributed systems and APIs. Familiarity with gRPC frameworks, Protocol Buffers (protobuf), and API management tools is typically required. Effective problem-solving, attention to detail, and collaboration skills help developers build scalable and maintainable services. These skills are essential for ensuring high-performance, reliable communication between microservices in modern applications.

What are some common challenges faced by developers working with gRPC in a production environment?

Developers working with gRPC often encounter challenges such as managing backward-compatible changes in service contracts, handling network latency and connectivity issues, and ensuring robust authentication and authorization for secure communication. Additionally, integrating gRPC with existing RESTful systems can require careful planning and the use of tools like gRPC-Gateway. Close collaboration with DevOps teams is also essential to properly monitor and debug distributed systems that leverage gRPC.

What is the difference between Grpc vs Software Engineer?

AspectGrpc

AspectSoftware Engineer
Required CredentialsTypically a bachelor's degree in computer science or related field, sometimes certifications in specific technologies
Work EnvironmentDevelops, tests, and maintains software applications, often in teams using various programming languages
Industry UsageUsed across tech companies, especially in backend and distributed systems development

Grpc is a communication protocol used by software engineers to build efficient, scalable APIs and microservices. While software engineers design and develop applications, Grpc is a tool they may utilize within their work. Understanding Grpc helps software engineers implement high-performance communication between services, making it a valuable skill in modern software development.

Job Summary

Optimum is a leading provider of Mobile, Broadband (DOCSIS, Fiber) and Video services in the United States. The Product Development organization is responsible for the technology enablement and development of these technologies for our customers along with the tools used by our teams to support them.

Build and extend capabilities across Optimum's internal omni-channel API platform - a Go gRPC backend deployed across GCP, AWS, and private cloud environments, serving Optimum's call-center, sales, and customer-support operations. You will own API and service delivery across multi-step workflows, with coordination across backend systems and presentation-layer consumers where appropriate.

Responsibilities
  • Design and implement API capabilities using Go, gRPC, and Protocol Buffers that support business workflows across customer, order, billing, catalog, mobile, and related domains
  • Develop and evolve service endpoints, orchestration logic, and integration layers across multiple backend and legacy systems
  • Integrate with internal and external systems using established architectural patterns, including SOAP, GraphQL, and enterprise adapter approaches where applicable
  • Translate business requirements into Protocol Buffer contracts, Google AIP-aligned API designs, and reliable service implementations
  • Expose platform APIs to internal consumer applications through well-defined service and gateway interfaces
  • Address error handling, caching, and data consistency concerns across distributed service interactions involving Cloud Spanner, Redis, and related data stores
  • Build and maintain automated tests using Go test frameworks to validate service behavior, integration paths, and contract expectations
  • Support user-facing feature delivery through stable API contracts and collaboration with presentation-layer engineering teams
  • Participate in platform modernization efforts, including migration from legacy integration patterns toward gRPC-based service delivery
  • Contribute to code reviews, technical discussions, and continuous improvement of engineering practices within GitLab CI-supported workflows
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience
  • 3+ years of professional software development experience building and maintaining backend systems or service-oriented applications
  • Strong Go development skills and experience building production backend services
  • Experience designing, building, or consuming REST or gRPC APIs in production environments
  • Working knowledge of Protocol Buffers, contract-first development, and code generation workflows
  • Understanding of service integration patterns, including synchronous communication and messaging approaches such as Pub/Sub or Kafka where applicable
  • Experience with relational or distributed data stores such as Cloud Spanner, and familiarity with caching using Redis
  • Proficiency with Git, code review practices, and GitLab CI or similar CI/CD pipelines
  • Ability to troubleshoot issues across API and service boundaries

Preferred

  • Experience with cloud platforms including GCP, AWS, and private cloud environments, and services such as Cloud Run, Cloud Spanner, Pub/Sub, and Redis
  • Experience integrating with legacy enterprise systems via SOAP, GraphQL, or similar protocols
  • Background in telecom, billing, mobile, or e-commerce domains
  • Exposure to Terraform or infrastructure-as-code practices
  • Experience coordinating API delivery with frontend or client engineering teams
