JOB DESCRIPTION
Group Fitness Instructor
Questions or comments should be directed to the Assistant Director of Group Fitness at your facility.
I. REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS
Club Policies
  • Be familiar with the Mountainside Fitness Information Packet and Employee Handbook.
  • Complete all training within 30 days. Compensation is administered for all training unless otherwise noted. A drug test is required before starting work.
  • Abide by minimum safety guidelines as determined by MSF, with recommendations from ACE, AFAA, and current research.
  • Understand and adhere to MSF policies for obtaining a substitute and/or time-off vacation procedures. As the original instructor, if the substitute you find does not show up, both instructors will be issued a written warning.
  • Know the consequences: performance deficiencies will be addressed based on severity and may include verbal/written warnings or termination.

Certifications & Professionalism
  • Provide evidence of a current MSF-approved nationally accredited certification and CPR certification, and pursue continuing education on an annual basis.
  • Demonstrate a solid knowledge base, proper form, and the physical ability to speak comfortably while heart rate is elevated. The ability to physically demonstrate all choreographic and functional movements is essential, as students rely on both visual and verbal cueing.
  • Must be able to commit to a minimum of 2 class hours per week if schedule allows.

II. RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES
Demonstrate Professionalism
  • Arrive 10 minutes early, prepared to teach, dressed, and with music cued. Although compensation is made for actual class time, arriving early allows time for mental preparation. Wear the Mountainside Fitness uniform shirt with black shorts or pants; clothing must be functional and in good repair.
  • Begin classes punctually. Introduce yourself and address any newcomers. Announce the class name, explain the nature of the class, and direct participants to any necessary equipment. Make club announcements prior to class. End on time and be available for participant questions. If another class follows, transition your students outside the studio so the next class may begin on time. (MSF classes are 55 minutes.)
  • Establish and maintain a professional manner at all times.

Serve Club Members
  • Always be guided by the best interests of the group. It is your obligation to provide options, modifications, and a class accurately based on the class description. Conduct classes that prioritize safety, effectiveness, and creativity.
  • Monitor student performance and modify choreography and intensity accordingly.
  • Establish a comfortable rapport with students. Be open to their comments and suggestions, with special sensitivity to concerns about music volume or speed.
  • Educate students on proper technique and share the latest research.
  • Facilitate communication between members and management. Encourage members to utilize comment cards, but be willing to listen directly.

Be a Team Member
  • Check emails/SPIKE daily and respond to all communication within 24 hours. Report vacations and illnesses to your ADGF as soon as possible.
  • Attend staff meetings and educational workshops offered at MSF. Support new classes and special events.
  • Support fellow instructors, take other instructors' classes, and speak positively about instructors, members, and staff.
  • Feedback and evaluations are given at regular intervals to counsel instructors, promote success, and support a positive salary review.

Administrative & General Duties
  • Treat microphone and stereo equipment with care. Know where the backup mic is and report all problems with electronic equipment immediately to your ADGF.
  • Clean up after yourself and, if necessary, your class. All equipment must be returned to appropriate storage.
  • Record class attendance on the stat sheet provided.
  • Time card (punch in or written) must be accurate. Pay periods are bi-monthly. Paychecks are located at your home club or via direct deposit.

III. OTHER
  • Report directly to the Assistant Director of Group Fitness at your facility.
  • Other job-related duties as assigned.
  • Progressive disciplinary procedures - at the discretion of management - include verbal warnings, written warnings, probation, and termination, and may not necessarily be applied in that order.
