Job description

You deserve a job that you feel proud of, where you can channel your knowledge and skills into projects that positively affect communities, and where you design your own path. This is Alliant. Become an employee-owner of a growing engineering and consulting firm where we value collaboration with opportunities to grow and succeed. Our success is driven by our employee-owners, and we're excited to have you be a part of it.
The Impact You'll Have:
This is a rare opportunity to build, lead, and shape a growing traffic engineering practice in one of the Mountain West's most dynamic transportation markets.
As Traffic Engineering Group Manager, you'll lead Alliant's traffic team in our Salt Lake City office - setting the vision, growing the business, and mentoring the next generation of traffic engineers. You'll combine technical leadership, people development, and client engagement to deliver meaningful projects that improve safety, mobility, and community outcomes across Utah.
We're looking for a leader who thrives at the intersection of strategy and execution - someone who enjoys developing teams just as much as delivering high-quality traffic engineering solutions. You'll play a visible role in expanding our presence with UDOT, local agencies, and private clients while helping define how our traffic group grows in the region.
What You'll Do:
Build & Lead the Practice
  • Establish the vision and strategy for a successful, growing traffic engineering group in Salt Lake City
  • Lead the delivery of traffic engineering and ITS services for public and private clients
  • Set and manage group goals, KPIs, and budgets while maintaining a strong culture of quality and accountability

Develop People & Teams
  • Recruit, hire, and retain exceptional traffic engineering professionals at all experience levels
  • Coach, mentor, and support staff growth through hands-on leadership and career development
  • Foster a collaborative, high-performing team environment where engineers can do their best work

Strengthen Client Relationships & Win Work
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with UDOT, local agencies, developers, and industry partners
  • Participate in business development efforts including client discovery, proposals, interviews, and pursuits
  • Collaborate with other disciplines and consulting partners to expand opportunities and deliver integrated solutions

Provide Technical & Project Leadership
  • Lead and manage traffic engineering projects from concept through delivery, ensuring quality, schedule, and budget performance
  • Prepare and/or oversee traffic analysis and design including:
    • Signing and pavement marking analysis and design
    • Signal warrants, analysis, design, and timing
    • Roadway lighting analysis and design
    • Traffic operations studies and safety studies
    • Traffic Control and Maintenance of Traffic design
    • ITS systems analysis and design
  • Oversee traffic modeling and analysis efforts, including forecasting and microsimulation (VISSIM/CORSIM)
  • Review and approve contracts, scopes, budgets, schedules, technical deliverables, and quality management plans
  • Serve as a trusted technical advisor to clients, staff, and leadership

What You'll Bring:
  • A Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering and an active Utah PE license
  • 15+ years of traffic engineering experience, including leading projects and developing teams
  • Deep knowledge of traffic engineering principles, practices, and state and national standards
  • A strong track record of mentoring, coaching, and developing engineering staff
  • The ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly to clients, stakeholders, and the public
  • A consistent commitment to delivering high-quality work on schedule
  • Hands-on experience with traffic analysis and modeling tools such as VISSIM, Synchro/SimTraffic, HCS, and/or StreetLight
  • Working knowledge of Bentley-based design platforms including MicroStation, GEOPAK (V8i), OpenRoads Designer, and/or InRoads
  • Comfort operating in a collaborative, team-oriented environment with strong interpersonal skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and the organizational skills needed to lead multiple initiatives
  • Experience with alternative delivery methods (design-build, PDB, CM/GC, etc.) is a plus

Why Alliant:
At Alliant, you're not just taking a job - you're becoming an employee-owner. We believe the best solutions come from empowered people who care deeply about their work, their teammates, and the communities they serve.
