What is a grid engineer?

A Grid Engineer is a professional who designs, operates, and maintains electrical grid systems that deliver electricity from power plants to consumers. They ensure the grid runs efficiently, safely, and reliably by overseeing infrastructure such as substations, transmission lines, and distribution networks. Grid Engineers play a crucial role in integrating renewable energy sources, managing grid stability, and addressing outages or emergencies. Their work often involves using advanced technology and data analysis to optimize grid performance.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a grid engineer?

To thrive as a Grid Engineer, you need a solid understanding of electrical engineering principles, power systems, and grid operations, typically backed by a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with grid modeling software (such as PSS/E or PowerWorld), SCADA systems, and relevant certifications like Professional Engineer (PE) licensure are commonly required. Strong problem-solving, analytical thinking, and communication skills help Grid Engineers manage complex projects and collaborate with cross-functional teams. These competencies are essential to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable operation and modernization of electrical grids.

How does a grid engineer typically collaborate with other departments to ensure reliable power distribution?

Grid Engineers work closely with operations, maintenance, and planning teams to monitor grid performance and quickly address any faults or outages. They often coordinate with IT specialists to implement and maintain grid automation systems, and may also interact with regulatory and compliance departments to ensure all standards are met. Effective communication and teamwork are crucial, as Grid Engineers must translate technical data into actionable steps for various stakeholders, ensuring safe and efficient power delivery.

What is the difference between Grid Engineer vs Substation Engineer?

AspectGrid EngineerSubstation Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical Engineering, relevant certificationsBachelor's in Electrical Engineering, relevant certifications
Work EnvironmentPower grid infrastructure, field and officeSubstation facilities, field and office
Industry UsagePower transmission and distribution companiesUtility companies, power plants
Primary FocusDesign, maintenance, and optimization of power gridsDesign, construction, and maintenance of substations

While both roles involve electrical engineering within the power industry, Grid Engineers focus on the overall power transmission network, ensuring efficient and reliable grid operation. Substation Engineers specialize in the design and maintenance of substations, which are critical nodes within the grid. Both roles require similar credentials and often work together to ensure a stable power supply.

Job description

About the Role

Lion Energy's Commercial & Industrial (C&I) product line — including the POWERsave Cabinet Series — is a pre-assembled, scalable battery energy storage system deployed at commercial and industrial facilities for peak shaving, energy cost reduction, and microgrid applications. As deployment volume grows and a new generation of the commercial EMS/BMS hardware platform is developed, we need a senior electrical resource who can sit at the intersection of Sales, field installation, and Product Engineering.

This role is field-facing today: you'll be the primary technical point of contact for installation issues, review installation blueprints before systems go in the ground, and advise Sales on product fit during the sales process. As product improvements reduce the field-support burden over time, the role will shift toward supporting electrical engineering work on the new C&I hardware platform. You'll report directly to the CTO.

Key Responsibilities

Field & Installation Support (primary focus today)

  • Serve as the primary technical point of contact for electrical issues on deployed C&I systems (POWERsaveCabinet Series), including PCS inverters, BMS/EMS-Pro, battery/PDU wiring, and grid islanding relays.
  • Review installer- and EPC-submitted single-line diagrams and installation blueprints for code compliance and system fit before deployment.
  • Diagnose and resolve field electrical issues remotely; travel on-site for escalations thatcan'tbe resolved otherwise.
  • Feed recurring field issues back to Product Engineering to reduce future installation friction.

Sales & Pre-Sale Engineering Support

  • Partner with Sales during the sales process to evaluate site conditions and advise on system sizing, configuration, and product fit for prospective C&I customers.
  • Provide technical input on proposals covering electrical requirements, interconnection, and code compliance.
  • Act as the technical liaison between Sales, Product Engineering, and external installers/EPCs/customers.

Product & Hardware Engineering Support (growing focus over time)

  • Support Product Engineering on electrical design and validation for the next-generation commercial EMS/BMS-Pro hardware platform.
  • Contribute to schematic review, wiring diagrams, and system-level electrical integration across PCS, BMS, EMS, and grid islanding components.

Compliance

  • Maintain and improve installation guides, technical bulletins, and field documentation.

Required Qualifications

  • BSEE with a power systems concentration, OR equivalent hands-on electrical experience (e.g., senior/master electrician with substantial commercial & industrial power systems background).
  • 5+ years working with commercial/industrial electrical systems; direct experience with battery energy storage, solar PV, or power electronicsstronglypreferred.
  • Working knowledge of the National Electrical Code, particularly Article 706 (Energy Storage Systems).
  • Demonstrated ability to read and evaluate single-line diagrams, wiring schematics, and site electrical plans.
  • Strong communicationskills — comfortable acting as the technical voice in customer- and sales-facing conversations.
  • Willingness to travel up to 25% for site visits and installation escalations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Direct experience with UL 9540/9540A/1973/1741 listed systems.
  • Familiarity with grid interconnection standards (e.g., IEEE 1547) and microgrid/islanding system design.
  • PE license, or journeyman/master electrician license.
  • Hands-on experience with lithium (LiFePO4) battery systems, PCS inverters, and BMS/EMS platforms.
  • Prior experience at a small company or startup, comfortable wearing multiple hats across engineering, sales support, and field work.
