What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Grid Energy Storage Engineer, and why are they important?

To excel as a Grid Energy Storage Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, energy systems, and grid integration, usually supported by a relevant degree and experience in power systems. Familiarity with tools like SCADA systems, battery management software, and certifications such as Professional Engineer (PE) or energy storage-specific credentials is often required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective collaboration skills are crucial for optimizing storage solutions and coordinating with utilities and teams. These competencies ensure safe, efficient, and reliable integration of energy storage systems into modern power grids, supporting energy transition and grid stability.

What are some typical challenges faced by professionals working in grid energy storage, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in grid energy storage often encounter challenges such as integrating new storage technologies with existing grid infrastructure, ensuring regulatory compliance, and managing the variability of renewable energy sources. Addressing these challenges requires strong collaboration with utility engineers, regulatory bodies, and technology vendors. Staying up-to-date on evolving industry standards and participating in interdisciplinary teams can help professionals navigate these complexities and contribute to more reliable, efficient grid operations.

What is grid energy storage?

Grid energy storage refers to technologies and systems that store electricity on a large scale for use by the power grid. These systems help balance supply and demand, stabilize the grid, and integrate renewable energy sources like solar and wind. Common types of grid energy storage include batteries, pumped hydro, and compressed air. By storing excess energy during low-demand periods and releasing it when demand is high, grid energy storage improves reliability and efficiency of the electricity supply.

What is the difference between Grid Energy Storage vs Battery Engineer?

Job description

About Treehouse
Treehouse is on a mission to accelerate the decarbonization of the places we live and work. We've built the go-to operating system for home electrification - partnering with brands like Toyota, General Motors, Rivian, and ChargePoint to deliver seamless, end-to-end EV charger and battery backup installations for their customers. We handle everything from scoping to permitting to installation, powered by proprietary technology that enables us to scope and design projects virtually at scale. We've completed thousands of installations across the country, built a growing roster of national partners, and are backed by strategic investors including CarMax, Holman, and Eaton. We're a small, scrappy team working on a problem that actually matters.
About the Role
We're looking for a highly motivated, systems-oriented operations leader to drive fulfillment excellence for Treehouse's fast-growing energy storage program. As Manager, Energy Storage Fulfillment, you'll own the entire post-sale customer journey - from procurement, permitting, and interconnections to installer readiness and final energization. This is an opportunity to shape the operational infrastructure for a core product line at a mission-driven, venture-backed electrification company. You will collaborate cross-functionally with Sales, Installers, and Customer Success teams to ensure every install meets the highest standards of quality, speed, and customer satisfaction.
Responsibilities
The Manager, Energy Storage Fulfillment will:
  • Manage all post-sale operational workflows for residential battery, vehicle-to-home, and vehicle-to-grad program fulfillment.
  • Coordinate and oversee all permitting and utility interconnection programs across Treehouse service areas.
  • Identify and deploy opportunities to apply AI and software tools to improve permitting, interconnection, and installation operations.
  • Partner with the Trade Partnerships Manager to design and ensure installer training, certification, and readiness.
  • Optimize the post-sale customer journey, ensuring timely, transparent, and proactive communications across all touchpoints.
  • Analyze fulfillment performance and drive continuous improvement through data, feedback, and process iteration.

Minimum Qualifications
Successful Manager, Energy Storage Fulfillment candidates will demonstrate:
  • Bachelor's degree; in lieu of degree, four years relevant work experience
  • 3+ years of experience in operations, logistics, or fulfillment in a tech-enabled home services environment
  • Experience working with building code enforcement across geographies, utilities, and/or permitting/interconnection processes
  • Experience defining and improving operational processes across cross-functional teams
  • Experience evaluating and implementing AI and software tools to support operational workflows (e.g., CRMs, agentic solutions)

Preferred Qualifications
Additionally, successful Manager, Energy Storage Fulfillment candidates may demonstrate:
  • Experience in residential solar, battery storage, vehicle-to-home EV charging, or home electrification operations
  • Familiarity with installer enablement, certification programs, and/or contractor mobilization
  • Understanding of grid services, interconnection policy, or DER program requirements
  • Experience in a startup or high-growth tech company environment
  • Excellent project management and communication skills

This role may be based in Chicago, San Francisco, Denver, or, for an adequately experienced candidate, remotely. This role will have an annual salary, plus equity and benefits. The annual salary range for this position is $110,000 - $130,000. This is a good faith estimate of what Treehouse may pay for a new hire; actual pay may vary based on prevailing wages in geographic location and a candidate's knowledge, skills, abilities, related experience, education, certifications, and ability to meet required job qualifications.
Featured benefits include:
  • Medical insurance
  • Vision insurance
  • Dental insurance
  • 401(k)
  • Unlimited paid time off
