Graphql Engineer information

What does a GraphQL engineer do?

A GraphQL Engineer specializes in designing, developing, and maintaining APIs using the GraphQL query language. They work on building efficient data-fetching systems that allow clients to request exactly the data they need from a server. GraphQL Engineers often collaborate closely with frontend and backend teams to optimize API performance, ensure data security, and streamline application development. Their responsibilities may also include schema design, implementing resolvers, and integrating GraphQL with various databases or services.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a GraphQL engineer?

To thrive as a GraphQL Engineer, you need strong proficiency in JavaScript or TypeScript, deep understanding of GraphQL schema design, and experience with API development, typically supported by a relevant computer science degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with tools like Apollo Server/Client, Relay, Node.js, and version control systems such as Git is essential, along with experience in RESTful APIs and cloud platforms. Excellent problem-solving skills, collaborative teamwork, and effective communication distinguish top performers in this role. These skills ensure robust, efficient API development and seamless integration across front-end and back-end systems, driving product scalability and user satisfaction.

What are some common challenges GraphQL engineers face when designing scalable APIs, and how can they be addressed?

GraphQL Engineers often encounter challenges ensuring that APIs remain performant and scalable as the complexity of queries and the number of clients grow. Common issues include over-fetching or under-fetching data, managing query complexity to prevent expensive operations, and maintaining clear schema documentation. These can be addressed by implementing query depth and cost analysis tools, optimizing resolvers, using efficient data loaders, and collaborating closely with frontend teams to refine schema design for real-world use cases. Regular code reviews and performance monitoring also help maintain a robust and scalable GraphQL API.

What is the difference between Graphql Engineer vs Backend Developer?

AspectGraphql EngineerBackend Developer
Primary FocusDesigning and implementing GraphQL APIsBuilding and maintaining server-side application logic
Skills & CertificationsGraphQL, JavaScript/TypeScript, API designServer-side languages (Java, Python, Node.js), database management
Work EnvironmentCollaborates with frontend teams, API developmentDevelops core backend systems, database integration
Industry UsageTech companies, startups, organizations adopting GraphQLBroadly used across industries for backend services

While both roles involve backend development skills, a Graphql Engineer specializes in creating and optimizing GraphQL APIs, whereas a Backend Developer focuses on overall server-side application development. The choice depends on whether the role emphasizes GraphQL technology or general backend systems.

Job description

Impact Shipt is transforming how people discover, shop for, and receive everyday essentials. The Member Marketplace is the front door to that experience—spanning discovery, personalization, pricing, loyalty, cart, checkout, and post‑order engagement across web and app. We are looking for a Principal Engineer, Full‑Stack Marketplace Platform to help define and scale the next generation of Shipt’s marketplace architecture. This is a high‑impact technical leadership role responsible for shaping both the customer‑facing experience layer and the backend platform capabilities that power it.

Responsibilities
  • Set technical direction across modern frontend architecture, backend services, GraphQL orchestration, Config‑Driven UI, pricing, loyalty, experimentation, and AI‑native engineering workflows.
  • Partner closely with Engineering, Product, Design, Data Science, and business stakeholders to build systems that are scalable, resilient, observable, and fast to evolve.
  • Own the technical vision and architecture for key areas of Shipt’s Member Marketplace platform across web, app, APIs, and backend services.
  • Lead end‑to‑end system design for customer‑facing marketplace experiences, ensuring frontend and backend architectures evolve together.
  • Drive the evolution of Config‑Driven / Server‑Driven UI patterns to support flexible, reusable, and dynamic experiences across web and app surfaces.
  • Architect and scale GraphQL orchestration patterns, including schema design, federation strategies, data‑fetching efficiency, caching, and platform governance.
  • Guide the design of resilient backend microservices and APIs that support high‑scale marketplace domains such as pricing, promotions, loyalty, personalization, and order experiences.
  • Champion AI‑native engineering practices across Marketplace Engineering, including AI‑assisted development, automated testing, documentation, code review workflows, and reusable engineering agents/tools.
Qualifications
  • 15+ years of software engineering experience, with a strong track record of designing and shipping production‑scale systems across frontend and backend domains.
  • Deep experience leading architecture for large‑scale customer‑facing platforms, marketplaces, commerce systems, or high‑traffic digital products.
  • Strong full‑stack technical depth, including modern frontend frameworks such as React, Next.js, TypeScript, and backend services built in languages such as Go, Python, Java, or Node.js.
  • Proven experience designing and scaling distributed systems, microservices, APIs, event‑driven architectures, and low‑latency platform capabilities.
  • Strong understanding of GraphQL, including schema design, federation, orchestration, caching strategies, and frontend/backend contract governance.
  • Experience with Config‑Driven UI, Server‑Driven UI, metadata‑driven applications, or dynamic content platforms.
  • Experience building or evolving platform capabilities in domains such as pricing, promotions, loyalty, personalization, experimentation, search/discovery, or checkout.
  • Strong understanding of cloud‑native architecture, including AWS or GCP, Kubernetes, Docker, infrastructure as code, and modern CI/CD practices.
  • Experience with observability and operational excellence, including tools such as Datadog, OpenTelemetry, Sentry, New Relic, or similar platforms.
  • Strong data modeling experience across relational databases, NoSQL systems, caching layers, and event streams.
Skills & Education
  • Back‑End Development, Front End Architecture, Web Development
  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience

Pay Range: $170,000 - $220,000 (guideline; total compensation varies by qualifications and location).

Work Arrangement
  • Hybrid roles in Birmingham, AL: in‑office at least 2 days per week (Wed & Thu).
  • Hybrid roles in Minneapolis, MN: in‑office at least 1 day per week (Tue‑Thu).
