Graphql Engineer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a GraphQL Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a GraphQL Engineer, you need strong proficiency in JavaScript or TypeScript, deep understanding of GraphQL schema design, and experience with API development, typically supported by a relevant computer science degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with tools like Apollo Server/Client, Relay, Node.js, and version control systems such as Git is essential, along with experience in RESTful APIs and cloud platforms. Excellent problem-solving skills, collaborative teamwork, and effective communication distinguish top performers in this role. These skills ensure robust, efficient API development and seamless integration across front-end and back-end systems, driving product scalability and user satisfaction.

What does a GraphQL Engineer do?

A GraphQL Engineer specializes in designing, developing, and maintaining APIs using the GraphQL query language. They work on building efficient data-fetching systems that allow clients to request exactly the data they need from a server. GraphQL Engineers often collaborate closely with frontend and backend teams to optimize API performance, ensure data security, and streamline application development. Their responsibilities may also include schema design, implementing resolvers, and integrating GraphQL with various databases or services.

What is the difference between Graphql Engineer vs Backend Developer?

AspectGraphql EngineerBackend Developer
Primary FocusDesigning and implementing GraphQL APIsBuilding and maintaining server-side application logic
Skills & CertificationsGraphQL, JavaScript/TypeScript, API designServer-side languages (Java, Python, Node.js), database management
Work EnvironmentCollaborates with frontend teams, API developmentDevelops core backend systems, database integration
Industry UsageTech companies, startups, organizations adopting GraphQLBroadly used across industries for backend services

While both roles involve backend development skills, a Graphql Engineer specializes in creating and optimizing GraphQL APIs, whereas a Backend Developer focuses on overall server-side application development. The choice depends on whether the role emphasizes GraphQL technology or general backend systems.

What is the salary of a GraphQL developer?

The salary of a GraphQL engineer varies based on experience, location, and industry, but typically ranges from $80,000 to $150,000 annually in many regions. Skilled developers with expertise in GraphQL, JavaScript, and related tools are in high demand and may earn higher compensation, especially with certifications or experience in full-stack development.

How much does a software engineer make at Apollo GraphQL?

A GraphQL Engineer's salary at Apollo GraphQL typically ranges from $100,000 to $150,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and skill set. Compensation may also include benefits such as stock options and flexible work arrangements.

What engineers make $500,000?

Senior GraphQL engineers with extensive experience, specialized skills, and often working in high-demand industries or companies can earn salaries around $500,000, especially when including bonuses and stock options. Achieving this level typically requires advanced knowledge of backend development, API design, and cloud platforms, along with a strong professional track record. Compensation varies based on location, company size, and individual expertise.

What are some common challenges GraphQL Engineers face when designing scalable APIs, and how can they be addressed?

GraphQL Engineers often encounter challenges ensuring that APIs remain performant and scalable as the complexity of queries and the number of clients grow. Common issues include over-fetching or under-fetching data, managing query complexity to prevent expensive operations, and maintaining clear schema documentation. These can be addressed by implementing query depth and cost analysis tools, optimizing resolvers, using efficient data loaders, and collaborating closely with frontend teams to refine schema design for real-world use cases. Regular code reviews and performance monitoring also help maintain a robust and scalable GraphQL API.

What companies use Apollo GraphQL?

Many companies across various industries use Apollo GraphQL to build scalable APIs, including organizations like Shopify, Coinbase, and The New York Times. As a GraphQL Engineer, familiarity with Apollo Client and Server is valuable for working with these technologies in production environments.

Job description

Location:ย Work can be done remotely from the US

No third-party agency submissions. Agencies, please do not call or email. Independent C2C candidates only.ย

KORE1, a nationwide provider of staffing and recruiting solutions, has an immediate opening for a Sr. iOS Engineer: Swift/SwiftUI, GraphQL / AppSync / AWS for B2C apps; AI 1st culture

This organization supports millions of users navigating health journeys, delivering a highly scaled, consumer-facing platform focused on communication, care coordination, and community. With a lean, high-performing engineering team and modern cloud-based architecture (AWS, serverless, GraphQL), the company is continuing to invest in its mobile experience, performance, and feature velocityย

You will contribute iOS software engineering in Swift and SwiftUI to enhance, extend, and maintain a production iOS application currently in the App Store, serving a large and active user base.
Working within cross-functional Agile scrum teams, you will contribute to design discussions; implement prototypes for feedback; research and integrate third-party technologies; and deliver high-quality production code. This role is heavily focused on new feature development, while also contributing to ongoing improvements in test coverage, performance, and architecture.
You will collaborate closely with product managers, backend engineers, and QA, operating as a fully embedded team member. The environment is highly collaborative, fast-moving, and team-centric, with strong emphasis on communication, code quality, and continuous improvement.
This is a full-time contract role (40 hours/week), open-ended in duration with potential for long-term engagement or conversion based on business needs.

Responsibilities:
  • Expertly develop the iOS mobile application using Swift and SwiftUI, delivering high-quality, scalable, and performant code.
  • Collaborate with product managers and cross-functional teams to translate user stories and business requirements into intuitive mobile experiences.
  • Contribute to architectural discussions, including application structure, performance optimization, and technical decision-making (with opportunity to influence and improve existing architecture).
  • Implement prototypes and iterate quickly based on feedback in an Agile environment.
  • Work extensively with GraphQL APIs (via AWS AppSync) to integrate and manage data across mobile and backend systems.
  • Evaluate and integrate third-party SDKs and libraries (e.g., AWS SDKs, Apollo), ensuring performance and maintainability.
  • Participate in code reviews, providing feedback and helping maintain high engineering standards.
  • Write unit tests and contribute to improving overall test coverage; partner with QA on broader testing strategy.
  • Contribute to CI/CD processes and deployment pipelines as part of the shared engineering responsibility model.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve bugs, performance issues, and production incidents.
  • Support performance optimization efforts (startup time, responsiveness, memory usage) in a consumer-facing application at scale.
  • Mentor junior developers where applicable and contribute to team knowledge sharing.
  • Contribute documentation, technical discussions, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Experience and Technical Qualifications
  • Strong experience building or supporting consumer-facing applications at scale (App Store presence or equivalent strongly preferred).
  • 5+ years developing iOS mobile applications using Swift and SwiftUI (required; 100% SwiftUI environment).
  • Strong expertise in the iOS ecosystem, including app lifecycle, performance optimization, and modern UI development patterns.
  • Familiarity with modern iOS architecture patterns (MVVM, etc.) is preferred but flexible.
  • Experience integrating third-party SDKs and APIs required
  • Hands-on experience working with GraphQL APIs (depth preferred, including schema understanding, performance considerations, and caching strategies).
  • Experience with AWS infrastructure, particularly AppSync, strongly preferred; familiarity with serverless components (Lambda, DynamoDB, Kinesis) is a plus.
