Inspired by daring artists, MoMA PS1 is committed to the exploration of contemporary art and culture, broadening perspectives on the issues of our day, and engaging New Yorkers and communities across the world. Founded in 1976, the institution was a defining force in the alternative space movement in New York City, transforming a nineteenth-century public schoolhouse in Long Island City into a site for artistic experimentation and creativity. PS1 has been a member of New York City’s Cultural Institutions Group (CIG) since 1982 and aliated with The Museum of Modern Art since 2000.

We recognize that a successful candidate will meet many of the requirements listed on this job description but may not meet 100% of the qualifications. If much of this job description describes you, we encourage you to apply for this role.

Summary

This position serves as MoMA PS1’s in-house graphic designer, supporting the Museum’s brand, exhibitions, publications, website, marketing, wayfinding, and other institutional communications. The Senior Graphic Designer develops and implements creative concepts and visual systems across print, digital, environmental, and experiential applications, ensuring a cohesive and evolving visual identity across platforms.

  • Design and produce graphics across the institution, including exhibition and program design; website and digital applications; marketing collateral; print, out-of-home, and digital advertising; fundraising materials; and temporary and permanent signage.
  • Work with curatorial and program teams, as well as artists, to design, prepare, and install exhibition graphics, including exhibition identities, title walls, wall texts, graphics murals, object labels, and print collateral.
  • Work with the Visitor Engagement team to ensure the quality and ongoing maintenance of exhibition and wayfinding signage, adhering to ADA standards and accessible design best practices.
  • Serve as design liaison for MoMA PS1’s website with external developers, ensuring the website extends PS1’s visual identity and supports programming, visitation, and accessible digital design.
  • Manage projects from concept through final production, overseeing scope, budgets, timelines, and approvals; managing external vendors and production; and coordinating with internal teams and external partners to ensure quality and deadlines are met.
  • Foster collaboration with The Museum of Modern Art’s design, digital, marketing, and communications teams and keep MoMA’s design team informed of updates to MoMA PS1’s brand and style guide.

Qualifications

  • Five to seven years of professional graphic design experience.
  • Portfolio demonstrating strong conceptual development, visual storytelling, art direction, typography, motion, and a high level of craft across print, digital, environmental, and campaign applications.
  • Strong understanding of brand systems and demonstrated ability to develop sophisticated design solutions that balance institutional consistency with creative expression.
  • Expert knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite. Proficiency in Figma and experience with After Effects or other motion design tools. Knowledge of HTML and CSS and familiarity with emerging creative technologies preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage projects from concept to completion, prioritize multiple concurrent projects, work independently, proactively solve problems, and collaborate effectively with colleagues, artists, external partners, and vendors.
