What is the difference between Graphic Programming vs Graphic Design?

AspectGraphic ProgrammingGraphic Design
Required SkillsProgramming languages (e.g., C++, JavaScript), coding, software developmentCreativity, visual communication, Adobe Creative Suite skills
Work EnvironmentSoftware development teams, tech companies, gaming studiosAdvertising agencies, design studios, marketing departments
Industry UsageDeveloping visual software, interactive media, game graphicsCreating visual content, branding, print and digital media

While both roles involve visual elements, Graphic Programming focuses on coding and developing visual software and interactive applications, whereas Graphic Design emphasizes creating visual content and branding through artistic skills. Understanding these differences helps clarify career paths and job expectations in the visual industry.

Are graphics programmers in demand?

Graphics programmers are in demand in industries such as gaming, virtual reality, and simulation, where advanced rendering and real-time graphics are essential. They often require expertise in graphics APIs like DirectX or OpenGL and knowledge of shader programming, with employment opportunities growing alongside technological advancements in visual computing.

How do I become a graphic programmer?

To become a graphic programmer, you typically need a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related field, along with strong programming skills in languages like C++ and knowledge of graphics APIs such as OpenGL or DirectX. Gaining experience through personal projects, internships, or contributing to open-source graphics software can also be valuable. Familiarity with math, especially linear algebra and geometry, is essential for developing efficient graphics algorithms.

What kind of job do graphic programmers do?

Graphic programmers develop software that creates, manipulates, and renders visual graphics for applications such as video games, simulations, and multimedia. They often work with programming languages like C++ or OpenGL, and have skills in computer graphics, algorithms, and real-time rendering techniques.

Job description

Level: Mid-Senior Graphics Programmer
Location: on-site/hybrid

From dodgeball in the streets to racetracks in your living room, we've always been more interested in asking "what if?" than following a roadmap. Whether we're dreaming up a chaotic game of hide & seek in the dark or putting a legendary space fox back in the pilot's seat, that inventor's mindset runs through everything we do. We make games for people who appreciate craft and a little bit of magic. If you're curious, you'll be in good company.

Velan Studios - creators of Mario Kart Live, Knockout City, Midnight Murder Club, and more - is looking for experienced graphics programmers.

We have three requirements:

  1. At least five years of graphics programming experience on console and/or mobile GPUs and knowledge of one or more current GPU architectures.
  2. Comfortable with the languages we use; C, C++, and GLSL.
  3. Experience using Vulkan, DX12, Metal, and/or other modern graphics APIs.

A few notes about how we do graphics programming at Velan:

  • Most of our games are built on our internal engine and tools.
  • We believe that owning our tech gives us certain technical superpowers.
  • Velan works on all kinds of games, from augmented reality driven kart racers to shooters played in the dark. The varied needs of our games sets the direction for our rendering tech.
  • Experienced graphics programmers operate with a fair degree of autonomy at Velan. While decisions about your areas of focus will be made collaboratively with the leadership team, once an area of focus is selected, you exercise a wide degree of discretion to accomplish your technical goals.
  • Although each of our systems has an owner, we are a small team, and you should expect to own several different systems. Additionally, we trust you to work across the codebase with minimal barriers.

The salary for this position is typically within the range specified below per year. Please note that the actual base pay may vary based on factors such as your qualifications, skills, experience, and other relevant considerations. In addition to your salary, our comprehensive compensation package includes various perks, such as potential annual bonuses (though they are not guaranteed), health, dental, vision, life, and disability insurance, a retirement savings plan, paid holidays, and flexible time-off benefits.
This range covers mid-senior level:

  • Mid-level $105k-$145k CAD
  • Senior level $125k-$165k CAD

Velan Studios is dedicated to building a diverse, inclusive, and authentic workplace, so if you are excited about a role but your experience doesn't align perfectly, we encourage you to apply anyway or submit a General Application. Velan Studios is an equal opportunity employer that is committed to inclusion, diversity, and providing a workplace free from discrimination and harassment. We seek to create a work culture that matches the diversity of our players.
