What is a graduate?

Graduates are individuals who have successfully completed a degree program at a college or university, typically earning a bachelor's, master's, or doctoral degree. They are often entering the workforce for the first time in their field of study or pursuing further education. Graduates may seek entry-level positions, internships, or graduate schemes to begin their professional careers and gain practical experience. Their skills and qualifications can vary depending on their course of study and level of education.

What types of entry-level projects or responsibilities can I expect as a recent graduate in my first professional role?

As a recent graduate, you can typically expect to be assigned tasks that help you develop industry-specific skills while contributing to the team’s objectives. These may include assisting with research, data analysis, report preparation, or supporting project teams with administrative and operational duties. Often, you'll be given the chance to shadow experienced colleagues and participate in training sessions to accelerate your learning. Early responsibilities are designed to build your confidence and help you understand the company’s processes, with increasing responsibility as you demonstrate competence.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a graduate in the workforce, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Graduate entering the workforce, you generally need a relevant academic degree, foundational knowledge in your field, and some practical experience such as internships. Familiarity with productivity tools like Microsoft Office, collaboration platforms, and basic industry-specific software is often expected. Strong communication, adaptability, and a willingness to learn help graduates stand out among peers. These skills enable graduates to quickly integrate, contribute effectively, and progress in their chosen career paths.

Job description

Join DOF as our Graduate Engineer
The Graduate Engineer supports engineering projects and technical work under the guidance of experienced engineers. This role assists with engineering design, documentation, and project deliverables. The Graduate Engineer may also support offshore and on-site project activities as needed. This position provides an opportunity to develop technical skills and gain experience across various engineering projects.
Responsibilities:
  • Accurately record and submit timesheets by required deadlines, including hours worked by deliverable.
  • Complete required company, industry, safety, medical, and offshore training requirements.
  • Work under the guidance and mentorship of senior engineering personnel.
  • Support the development and maintenance of engineering and management system documentation as needed.
  • Apply health, safety, and environmental requirements throughout engineering design, work package development, and offshore operations.
  • Identify and report safety concerns, hazards, near misses, and incidents, and support a safe working environment.
  • Ensure engineering procedures, designs, equipment, and deliverables meet applicable risk assessment, quality, and safety requirements.
  • Apply relevant engineering standards, codes, company procedures, and project requirements.
  • Support continuous improvement and practical, safe, and cost-effective engineering solutions.
  • Produce accurate, clear, and compliant technical documentation and deliverables.
  • Assist with engineering and HSE initiatives, including vessel safety documentation, as needed.

Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering (as minimum) and eligibility for membership of a national certifying institute (PE / EA / IMechE / RINA etc)

Is this the perfect role for you, but you don't meet every single requirement? We value the right person over a perfect match to a job description. Research shows that underrepresented groups are less likely to apply unless they meet every listed requirement, and we don't want that to hold great talent back, so we encourage you to apply. It's the best way for us to find the right talent for this role, or another, and that could be you.
Location:
This position will be based in Houston, Texas.
Application due date: 09.07.2026
