What Does a Graduate UX Designer Do?

As a graduate UX designer, you design and develop a visual interface for people to interact with, as well as addressing other aspects of user experience unique to your software, websites, or systems. As part of this user experience job, you interact with your intended users to gain feedback about the design, evaluate each element of the interface, and coordinate with programmers or stakeholders to make changes as needed. In this industry, graduate often means recent graduate, so these jobs are often internships available before or after completing your degree. When they are, this can limit the type of activities you are allowed to perform but provide valuable experience to help you get a full-time position afterward.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Graduate UX Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Graduate UX Designer, you need a solid understanding of user-centered design principles, basic proficiency in visual design, and a relevant degree or coursework in UX, HCI, or a related field. Familiarity with industry-standard tools like Figma, Sketch, Adobe XD, and experience with wireframing or prototyping platforms is expected. Strong communication, empathy, and teamwork skills help you collaborate effectively and understand user needs. These abilities ensure you can create intuitive, user-friendly designs that meet both user expectations and business goals.

What are some common challenges Graduate UX Designers face when starting their careers?

Graduate UX Designers often encounter challenges such as balancing user needs with business goals, adapting to fast-paced project timelines, and effectively communicating design rationale to stakeholders. As newcomers, they may also need time to become comfortable with industry-standard tools and user research methods. Collaborating within multidisciplinary teams can be both rewarding and challenging, requiring strong interpersonal skills and a willingness to learn from feedback. With experience, these challenges become valuable learning opportunities that contribute to professional growth.

What is a Graduate UX Designer?

They work under the guidance of senior designers to research user needs, create wireframes and prototypes, and test designs for usability. Graduate UX Designers typically have recently completed a relevant degree or training program and are building their skills in user research, interaction design, and visual design. Their role is to help ensure that products are easy and enjoyable to use while learning from more experienced team members.

Job description

UX Designer
What You Will Be Doing
As a UX Designer at Premier, you will execute interaction and visual design work for both internal enterprise tools and member-facing digital products. You will apply user research findings and business requirements to create user-centered designs that are intuitive, consistent, and aligned with Premier's design standards. You will design interaction flows, wireframes, and prototypes that clearly communicate your recommendations to cross-functional teams including product management and development.
This role works within an established UX process and design system, contributing meaningfully to the quality of Premier's product experiences while continuing to grow their craft. A UX Designer at Premier is expected to bring a strong portfolio that demonstrates hands-on, professional design experience and an understanding of user-centered design principles.
Key Responsibilities
Responsibility #1 - 80% | Design
  • Translate user research findings, business requirements, and technical constraints into clear, well-reasoned design solutions.
  • Design interaction flows, wireframes, and interactive prototypes for desktop and mobile applications.
  • Deliver prototypes of varying fidelity - from low-fidelity click-throughs to polished interactive prototypes in Figma - to effectively communicate design intent to stakeholders and development teams.
  • Produce high-fidelity mockups in Figma that adhere to Premier's design system and visual standards.
  • Participate in design critiques, incorporating feedback from peers and design leadership to improve deliverables.
  • Collaborate closely with product managers and developers throughout the project lifecycle to ensure design integrity is maintained.
  • Follow the user-centered design process and principles as directed by design leadership.
  • Maintain consistency with interaction design standards and flag potential exceptions to design leadership.
  • Seek opportunities to improve the user experience while maintaining alignment with established design patterns.
  • Actively build working relationships within the UX team and across product and development teams.

Responsibility #2 - 5% | Research Application
  • Apply findings from user research activities - including usability tests, contextual inquiries, and user surveys - to inform design decisions.
  • Collaborate with UX researchers and product managers to understand research insights and translate them into actionable design improvements.
  • Participate in usability testing sessions and assist in documenting observations and outcomes.
  • Conduct light industry research to stay current on UX trends, patterns, and emerging best practices relevant to assigned products.

Responsibility #3 - 10% | Project Management
  • Manage personal project milestones, deadlines, and deliverable schedules for assigned work.
  • Keep cross-functional teammates informed on design progress and decisions throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Capable of managing up to 3 concurrent projects within an assigned business line.

Responsibility #4 - 5% | General & Administrative
  • Maintain an understanding of Premier's organizational structure and product portfolio.
  • Perform all administrative duties as assigned, including attending team meetings, submitting time and expense reports, completing required trainings, and performance self-evaluations.
  • Work with supervisor to identify performance improvement opportunities and actively improve in those areas.

Required Qualifications
Work Experience:
Years of Applicable Experience - 2 or more years
Education:
High School Diploma or GED (Required)
Preferred Qualifications
Skills:
  • Proficiency in Figma for wireframing, prototyping, and high-fidelity design
  • Strong visual design fundamentals - typography, color, layout, hierarchy, and composition
  • Working knowledge of interaction design principles and user-centered design methodologies
  • Ability to interpret and apply UX research findings and business direction to design work
  • Ability to take clear direction and execute design work quickly and accurately, iterating efficiently based on feedback
  • Understanding of design systems and component-based design
  • Strong communication skills - able to clearly articulate design decisions to both design and non-design stakeholders
  • Attention to detail and a commitment to producing polished, high-quality work

Experience:
  • 2+ years of hands-on, professional UX or product design experience within a company environment
  • A portfolio demonstrating sustained, full-time design work across multiple projects or products
