What is a graduate rotational program?

A Graduate Rotational Program is a structured entry-level program designed for recent graduates to gain experience in various departments or functions within an organization. Participants typically rotate through different roles over a set period, such as 12 to 24 months, allowing them to develop a broad skill set and better understand the company’s operations. These programs often include training, mentorship, and networking opportunities, with the goal of preparing graduates for permanent positions within the company. Such programs are common in industries like finance, consulting, technology, and engineering.

How does participating in a graduate rotational program help accelerate career development compared to starting in a traditional entry-level role?

A Graduate Rotational Program offers exposure to multiple departments or functions within an organization, allowing participants to develop a broad skill set and gain a holistic understanding of the business. This cross-functional experience helps graduates identify their strengths and interests, making them more versatile and better prepared for leadership roles. Additionally, these programs often include mentorship, structured training, and frequent feedback, which can accelerate professional growth and open doors to diverse career paths within the company.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a graduate rotational program, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Graduate Rotational Program, candidates typically need a relevant bachelor's degree, strong analytical abilities, and foundational knowledge in their field. Familiarity with productivity software such as Microsoft Office, data analysis tools, and sometimes specific industry systems is often expected. Exceptional communication, adaptability, and a willingness to learn help individuals excel as they rotate through different roles and teams. These skills and qualities are crucial for quickly adapting to new environments, building professional relationships, and gaining broad, practical experience across the organization.

Job description

This 18–24 month rotational graduate and early careers programme is available in London, New York, Hong Kong and Singapore. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to work across multiple technology teams — up to six — in their chosen office. The breadth of this graduate programme will help you build a strong foundation while gaining exposure to different technologies, development approaches, and areas of the business.Graduates

Whether you’re in your final year or have recently graduated, this programme is designed for people who are excited to keep learning and build a strong foundation in technology. We take your interests into account, matching them with areas where you can make the greatest impact.

While a Computer Science degree is not a requirement, we are looking for candidates who have actively developed their technical and programming skills — through internships, hackathons, or personal projects. Applications are welcome from high-achieving STEM students at prestigious universities at all levels, including undergraduates.

The programme includes personalised mentoring, regular seminars with senior leaders and key members of staff, social events, and opportunities to get involved in the firm’s charitable activities.

If you’re already in the early stages of your career and want more breadth, faster growth, or hands‑on exposure to financial technology, this programme is for you. We take your interests and existing experience into account, matching them with areas where you can make the greatest impact.

We are looking for candidates who have actively developed their technical and programming skills — through existing roles and, side projects, or open‑source contributions. The rotational structure means you’re not boxed into one team; you’ll move across the stack and grow quickly in ways you wouldn’t in a single role.

Like our graduates, you’ll benefit from personalised mentoring, regular seminars with senior leaders, social events, and opportunities to get involved in the firm’s charitable activities.

The rotations you undertake as part of our graduate and early careers technology programme will be unique to you, shaped by your skills, interests, and development goals. The different technology teams available as part of the programme can be explored here.

Example Projects

To give you a sense of the kind of work our technologists do, example projects include:

  • Benchmarking and onboarding a high‑performance distributed database
  • Building developer tooling to improve safety in stream processing systems
  • Writing data pipelines that feed into systematic trading models
  • Creating a platform to provide insights into, and improve, trade optimisation and performance
  • Redesigning the core library used by the Technology team’s CI/CD platform

These projects reflect the breadth of experience available to graduates and those in the early stages of their careers, offering hands‑on exposure to real business challenges, modern technologies, and impactful engineering work.

Progression at Marshall Wace

The rotational format of our graduate and early careers technology programme gives you the opportunity to explore different roles within the Technology team before deciding where you are best placed to grow and contribute. This may include rotations across both Software Engineering and Site Reliability Engineering teams. By the end of the programme, you will have the opportunity to move into the team that best aligns with your interests, strengths, and longer‑term career development goals.

For graduates and those in the early stages of their careers, progression after completing the programme is not rigidly defined. There is no fixed ladder to climb. Growth can take many forms – from taking on more complex projects, to mentoring colleagues or new joiners, to exploring opportunities for international experience. Your career progression and professional development will be shaped by your strengths, ambitions, and impact, in partnership with your manager.

Technology is at our core

Technology is at our core. It is industry‑defining, best‑in‑class, and we are always striving to go further. As part of our technology graduate programme and early careers opportunities, you will have the chance to work with cutting‑edge technologies while learning from some of the strongest technical talent in the industry.

This programme is an opportunity for graduates and those in the early stages of their careers to accelerate their development and gain invaluable real‑world experience. You will be continually challenged to build new skills, tackle unfamiliar problems, and push yourself beyond your comfort zone.

There are no small cogs in big wheels here. Our teams are lean, responsibilities are meaningful, and opportunities are there for the taking. During the programme, you will work across a wide variety of projects and see them through from start to finish, gaining hands‑on experience and making a real impact from day one.

Ownership and Autonomy

At Marshall Wace, we believe in giving people at the start of their careers real ownership and autonomy over projects that add tangible value to the business. Through our graduate and early careers technology programme, you will be encouraged to approach challenges in your own way, question the status quo, and contribute meaningfully to our success. The trust we place in our early careers technologists empowers you to seize opportunities, grow quickly, and make a difference from day one. Join us and be part of a team that values your potential and invests in your future.

You will also, of course, be eligible for the benefits relevant to your office.

Academic achievement
