Job description

Description Title: Assistant Professor or Associate Professor (Population Sciences in the Pacific, Cancer Epidemiology Program, Medicine, Health) Position Number: Pending Hiring Unit: University of Hawaii Cancer Center Location: Kakaako Closing Date: Continuous Tenure Track: Tenure Track Full Time/Part Time: Full time Other Conditions: This advertisement is for an 11-month, tenure-track faculty position. Continuation of appointment is contingent upon satisfactory performance. The University of Hawai'i (UH) Cancer Center conducts research on the causes, prevention, and treatment of cancer across a broad array of disciplines, including epidemiology, environmental sciences, immunology, geospatial information sciences, molecular carcinogenesis, and bioinformatics/biostatistics.

Assistant Professor Duties and Responsibilities Serves as an expert in cancer epidemiology and cancer-related health disparities. Research addressing the role of diet, physical activity, life course, geospatial information sciences, environmental sciences, immunology, molecular, genetic, pharmacogenetic, bioinformatics, and clinical epidemiology are desirable. Collaborates with faculty in other areas to address multiple research areas.

Leads an independent, extramurally-funded research program to advance scientific discoveries in reducing cancer risk in collaboration with other faculty members at the University of Hawaii (UH) Cancer Center, and the University of Hawai'i, as well as researchers at other institutions. Publishes research in peer-reviewed scientific journals. Writes and secures extramural research grants for conducting innovative etiology and intervention research in community, clinical, or other settings; Performs other scholarly activities as assigned.

May supervise postgraduate students (PhD or MS) and participate in graduate-level teaching. Perform scholarly activities as assigned. Associate Professor Duties and Responsibilities 1.

Same duties and responsibilities as Assistant Professor but will require greater accountability for more complex projects. 2. Serve as a role model within the UH Cancer Center, the UH, and in the national or international research, academic, and/or medical community.

3. May assist in the administration of the program and with other related professional and scientific research endeavors. Assistant Professor Minimum Qualifications ** For Non-Medical Degree (MD) holder, doctorate in biomedical sciences from a college or university of recognized standing; ** For MD holder, MD or other generally recognized equivalent medical degree from a medical school of recognized standing; U.S

Board certification or qualification in the involved specialty; must be eligible for licensure or licensed to practice in the State of Hawaii; Demonstrated ability in teaching and patient care (for MD); Demonstrated initiative, interest in scientific work, and adaptability; Demonstrated ability to generate independent research reports, publications, and grant proposals; Demonstrated ability to effectively meet, interact, and confer with others. Associate Professor Minimum Qualifications ** For Non-MD, four years of effective research with demonstrated increasing professional maturity and independence at the rank of Assistant Professor or equivalent. ** For MD, four years in the rank of Assistant Professor, or four years of other medical experience, or a total of four years of teaching in the rank of Assistant Professor and other medical experience, or one year at the rank of Associate Professor at another medical school of recognized standing; Recognition for having made a significant scholarly contribution to the involved clinical specialty (for MD); Demonstrated research ability judged competent and adequate for the rank as compared with peers active in the same field at other major research universities; Demonstrated ability to plan and organize research activities; Demonstrated ability in teaching, research, and program administration; A strong research track record with active national peer-reviewed funding in cancer and/or clinical and translational research, with evidence of a sustained extramural funding base.

Demonstrated ability to serve as a role model for students and junior colleagues, and to effectively meet, interact and confer with others. Desirable Qualifications For Assistant Professor: A strong research track record with active national peer-reviewed funding in cancer and/or clinical and translational research, with evidence of a sustained extramural funding base. Experience in research involving multi-ethnic, multicultural, and undeserved populations.
