How much do graduate physicist jobs pay per year?
What is a graduate physicist?
A Graduate Physicist job typically involves applying physics principles to solve real-world problems in research, engineering, technology, or data analysis. Responsibilities may include conducting experiments, analyzing data, developing simulations, or contributing to product development. These roles are found in industries like healthcare, aerospace, energy, and finance. Strong analytical skills, mathematical proficiency, and problem-solving abilities are essential. Many graduate physicists also pursue further education or specialized training to advance their careers.
What are the typical daily responsibilities of a graduate physicist?
As a Graduate Physicist, your daily tasks often include conducting experiments or simulations, collecting and analyzing data, and preparing technical reports or presentations of your findings. You may also assist with the maintenance and calibration of laboratory equipment or contribute to the development of new research methods. Collaboration is common, so you'll regularly interact with senior scientists, engineers, or cross-functional team members to advance project goals. Over time, you may take on additional responsibilities such as mentoring interns or presenting at industry conferences, offering valuable opportunities for professional growth.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a graduate physicist?
To thrive as a Graduate Physicist, you need a solid grounding in physics principles, mathematics, and experimental or computational methods, supported by a physics degree. Familiarity with data analysis software (such as MATLAB or Python), laboratory equipment, and sometimes industry-specific certifications are commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, effective teamwork, and clear communication help set candidates apart in collaborative and often multidisciplinary environments. These capabilities are crucial for successfully conducting research, solving complex problems, and contributing to innovative scientific or technical projects.

Job description
Texas Oncology is seeking qualified candidates for an exciting Certified Medical Physicist to join our San Marcos, TX Team! The successful candidate will be part of a physics group consisting of 16 physicists, a medical physics assistant, two physics residents, and 17 dosimetrists covering nine facilities in the Central Texas region. This group supports 10 radiation oncologists in a busy practice setting.
This position will primarily provide medical physics coverage for the San Marcos Cancer Center. The San Marcos center is shared between two Radiation Oncologists and supported by one medical physicist, one dosimetrist, one CT tech, and four radiation therapists. The San Marcos center is equipped with one Varian Truebeam with AlignRT and one GE Discovery RT CT scanner and has a busy stereotactic program. The Central Texas region uses a shared Aria/Eclipse database with several Radformation products, Radcalc, MIM, and SNC Routine.
While the San Marcos physicist is the solo physicist onsite, they work together remotely with other physicists in the region to share chart responsibilities and allow for cross coverage during vacations. This location works closely with another nearby site with three more physicists and with busy HDR, TBI, and stereo programs, so there will be ample opportunity to keep a wide range of clinical skills sharp.
The Central Texas physics group is a close-knit and collaborative team. We work on a rotating 4-10's schedule, with each physicist getting the opportunity for 3-day weekends for several months each year. We are open to remote work as the clinic schedule allows, and we encourage team members to participate in professional projects in their particular areas of interest. IMRT QA and monthly mechanical QA is completed by the medical physics assistant. The region also utilizes a remote PRN physicist as needed to assist with vacation coverage. Physicists in the region have the opportunity to work closely with medical physics residents, if desired, as well as with dosimetry students and radiation therapy students. Texas Oncology offers a mock oral exam for those candidates pursuing board certification.
San Marcos is a thriving college town, home of Texas State University, that is conveniently located in Central Texas 30 minutes south of Austin and 45 minutes north of San Antonio and is just a stone’s throw from historic Gruene and New Braunfels. San Marcos is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream, boasting over 1200 acres of parkland, including miles of hiking and biking trails and public access river frontage on the San Marcos River. The San Marcos River is spring fed, so it stays a constant 72 degrees year-round, and is perfect for tubing, kayaking, paddleboarding, or even snorkeling. Aside from outdoor attractions, San Marcos has a vibrant art community, a myriad of local breweries and spots for live music, numerous shopping and dining options, and a long and rich history that can be explored in the city’s many museums.
With more than 400 physicians and over 170 sites of service Texas Oncology is a pioneer in community-based cancer treatment and is united in healing with US Oncology, one of the country’s foremost cancer treatment and research networks. You will appreciate the opportunity to collaborate with other network physicists who are eager to share their expertise.
Texas Oncology encourages continuing professional education and offers a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, vision, life, short- and long-term disability insurance and 401(k).
Responsibilities
