PURPOSE

The Network Engineers at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi are key members of the Information Technology Department, within the Division of Infrastructure & Research Computing, responsible for the effective design, provisioning, installation, configuration, operation, and maintenance of network systems throughout their lifecycle. This includes, but is not limited to, supporting both on-premises and cloud-based network infrastructure, implementing patches, addressing vulnerabilities, applying software updates, and configuring new features to enhance network performance and security. The role also requires building and maintaining positive relationships with stakeholders and vendors to ensure that the network systems and related procedures effectively support the success of our university's strategic goals.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Administer Campus Enterprise Network - 50%

Network Management:

  • Perform day-to-day administration and maintenance of campus network infrastructure, including Local Area Networks (LAN), Wide Area Networks

  • (WAN), and Data Center environments, ensuring reliable performance and availability.

  • Network Security Support:

  • Assist in the implementation and maintenance of network security measures, including the configuration and monitoring of firewalls, VPNs, and other security devices, in collaboration with the Information Security team.

Monitoring & Troubleshooting:

  • Continuously monitor network performance, analyze system alerts, and troubleshoot issues to minimize downtime and optimize network efficiency.

Vendor Collaboration & Updates:

  • Engage with vendors to address and resolve network vulnerabilities, ensuring timely application of security patches and updates to network equipment

Team Contribution:

  • Contribute to the success of the Network Services team by providing technical support, sharing knowledge, and collaborating effectively with team members on various network-related projects

Network Design - 25%

Network Design Implementation:

  • Assist in the design and implementation of network solutions for complex projects, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and technical requirements.

Plan Review & Analysis:

  • Participate in the review and analysis of network design plans, providing feedback and recommendations for improvements or adjustments.

Collaboration with Senior Staff:

  • Work closely with the Manager of Network Services and senior network engineers to develop and refine network designs, including the review of construction blueprints and other technical documents.

Project Coordination:

  • Collaborate with the Project Management Team and participate in construction and project meetings as needed to ensure successful integration of network infrastructure in new builds or upgrades.

System Communication & Routing:

  • Assist in the design, engineering, and management of complex system communication and routing protocols to ensure efficient and secure network operations.


Strategic Planning and Documentation - 20%

Technology Research & Innovation:

  • Conduct research on emerging technologies to identify opportunities for automating processes, enhancing efficiencies, and improving network security. Develop and maintain documentation such as designs, plans, maps, methods, and procedures related to network operations.

  • Stakeholder Collaboration:

    • Facilitate input from clients, contractors, and vendors to support the planning and execution of large and complex networking projects. Engage with vendors to review the latest technologies and industry roadmaps.

  • Project Planning Support:

    • Assist the manager and senior network engineers in developing work plans and schedules for network projects, including outlining project phases, identifying required personnel, and determining equipment needs.

  • Reporting & Documentation:

    • Prepare and deliver reports and summaries for management and stakeholders, including status updates, problem reports, progress summaries, and system utilization reports.

Other - 5%

  • Availability & Flexibility:

    • Be prepared to work nights, weekends, and holidays as required to support network operations and project timelines.

Training & Professional Development:

Engage in ongoing training and professional development opportunities to enhance technical skills and stay current with industry trends.

  • Additional Responsibilities:

    • Perform other duties as assigned, contributing to the overall success of the team and the organization.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field.

  • Three years of related experience.

  • Additional experience may be considered as a substitution for the minimum education requirement:

    • Associate's degree and Five (5) years of related experience.

    • High School Diploma & Seven (7) years of related experience.

  • Excellent written communication, analytical, interpersonal, and organizational skills.

  • Proven ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Possession of professional-level certifications relevant to the field, such as CCNA, CCNP, CCDA, CWNA, ITIL, or other recognized industry credentials.

  • Hands-on experience with Cisco technologies, including routers, switches, wireless systems, firewalls, telephony, and advanced tools like Cisco ACI, ISE, ASA, Firepower, and DNAC.

  • Experience with cloud-based infrastructure environments, particularly Azure.

  • Proficiency in using software applications for creating network diagrams and related documentation, including word processing and spreadsheets.

  • In-depth knowledge of IT industry trends, IT security regulations

  • Familiarity with the Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) framework.

  • Experience with network management tools such as SolarWinds Orion and Infoblox DDI.

  • Experience in the higher education sector, with an understanding of its unique IT needs and challenges.

  • Demonstrated knowledge in strategic thinking and planning, with the ability to effectively apply these skills to network engineering projects.

  • Familiarity with project and operations management principles.
