Graduate Music Internship information

What is a graduate music internship?

A Graduate Music Internship is a temporary, hands-on work experience for individuals who have recently completed or are currently pursuing a graduate degree in music. These internships provide practical training in areas such as music education, performance, composition, or music administration. Interns work closely with professionals in the field, gaining valuable insights and skills that complement their academic studies. This experience can help interns build their professional network and improve their employment prospects after graduation.

What types of projects and responsibilities can a graduate music intern expect to work on?

As a Graduate Music Intern, you can expect to engage in a variety of hands-on projects such as assisting with music production, supporting live event setups, cataloging and editing audio files, and collaborating with composers or sound engineers on creative tasks. Interns often help coordinate rehearsals, participate in music research, and contribute to social media or marketing campaigns for music releases. Depending on the organization, interns may also have the chance to shadow professionals in different departments, providing valuable exposure to the industry's workflow and fostering skill development for future roles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a graduate music intern?

To thrive as a Graduate Music Intern, you generally need a solid background in music theory, performance, or composition, supported by a relevant bachelor's degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with music notation software (such as Sibelius or Finale), digital audio workstations (like Logic Pro or Ableton Live), and audio recording equipment is often required. Strong teamwork, adaptability, and clear communication skills help interns collaborate effectively with diverse ensembles and staff. These skills and qualities are vital for contributing meaningfully to projects, learning from professionals, and gaining practical experience in the music industry.
