| Aspect | Graduate Biomedical Engineer | Biomedical Technician |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Bachelor's degree in biomedical engineering or related field; some roles may require internships | Associate's or bachelor's degree in biomedical technology or related field; certification often preferred |
| Work Environment | Design, development, and testing of medical devices; research settings; labs | Maintenance, repair, and calibration of medical equipment in hospitals or clinics |
| Employer & Industry Usage | Hospitals, medical device companies, research institutions | Hospitals, clinics, biomedical service companies |
Graduate Biomedical Engineers focus on designing and developing medical devices and systems, often working in research or development environments. Biomedical Technicians primarily maintain and repair medical equipment in clinical settings. Both roles require technical knowledge, but differ in responsibilities and work settings.
A graduate biomedical engineering degree is usually a master's degree that focuses on the research and design of medical devices and equipment, as well as programming the software necessary for such devices to work. Biomedical engineers help develop artificial organs, prosthetic body parts, and various other devices as needed. Many also repair and troubleshoot such devices. Depending on the type of work you do as a graduate biomedical engineer, you may work closely with doctors and other direct healthcare providers to help them implant and configure medical devices in particularly complex cases. Some people continue on to get a doctorate in this field. Doctors of biomedical engineering often focus more on cutting-edge research and highly experimental devices.

About the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at the Georgia Institute of Technology
The School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at the Georgia Institute of Technology is one of the largest producers of electrical engineers and computer engineers in the United States. Almost 2,600 students are enrolled in the School's graduate and undergraduate programs, and in the last academic year, 801 degrees were awarded. All ECE undergraduate and graduate programs are in the top five of the most recent college rankings by U.S. News & World Report.
In addition to the main campus in Atlanta, Georgia, ECE also has permanent operations at Georgia Tech-Lorraine in France. Graduate students who spend at least one semester each at of the Georgia Tech locations (Atlanta, Lorraine, on two continents, North America and Europe) can earn the Georgia Tech Global Engineering Immersion Program (GEIP) Certificate when they receive the Georgia Tech M.S. degree.
Over 110 ECE faculty members are involved in 11 areas of research and education: bioengineering, computer systems and software, digital signal processing, electrical energy, electromagnetics, electronic design and applications, nanotechnology, optics and photonics, systems and controls, telecommunications, and VLSI systems and digital design: and the School is either home to or a key player in almost 20 research centers and consortia.
ECE is key to Georgia Tech's growing reputation as an internationally recognized educational and research and development university. ECE is firmly committed to sustaining excellence in traditional areas of strength and venturing into burgeoning areas of opportunity.
In recent years, advanced packaging has taken center stage as the semiconductor industry pursues increasingly energy-efficient, high-performance, and low-cost electronic systems. While this field is undergoing revolutionary shifts today, advanced packaging in the new era of Moore's Law will undoubtedly offer extreme levels of die integration and bonding. This density will begin to blur the boundary between on- and off-chip connectivity due to ever-denser physical I/O interfaces. However, such tight integration introduces severe thermal challenges that demand innovative cooling solutions fully compatible with 2.5D and 3D architectures.
We are seeking a Research Engineer II to support the modeling, simulation, fabrication, process integration, and measurement of these innovative cooling solutions. Candidates must possess expertise in thermal modeling using commercial tools, alongside hands-on cleanroom and laboratory experience in both fabrication and thermal characterization. Cleanroom fabrication skills should include silicon deep reactive ion etching (DRIE), through-silicon via (TSV) fabrication, and chip bonding/assembly to support the development of various thermal testbeds. Experience with glass processing is highly desirable.
A Master's degree in related area, and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree, or
A Master's degree in related area, and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor's degree, or
