Job description

Assists with the daily operations of a department or work unit. Develops program guidelines and policies and may be responsible for the implementation of major programs or projects within a department.

The University of Memphis is a leading, student-centered, urban public R1 research institution. Located in Memphis, Tennessee, on 1,160 acres. The University serves a population of nearly 20,000 students and 2,500 employees, including more than 1,000 full-time faculty members. The University offers bachelor's degrees in more than 230 areas of study, master's degrees in more than 50 subjects and doctoral degrees in 26 disciplines; supported an institutional record of more than $100 million in research awards for FY24; and has an operating budget of close to $500 million.

Master's Degree and three (3) years of relevant experience.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

Fraternity and Sorority System Leadership (40%)

  • Provide comprehensive leadership and oversight for all Fraternity and Sorority Life (FSL) operations, including budget management, data collection, assessment, and information sharing.
  • Serve as the primary advisor to one or more governing councils (Interfraternity Council, National Pan-Hellenic Council, and College Panhellenic Council) and provide overall leadership to all governing bodies within FSL.
  • Oversee the coordination and assessment of the chapter coaching program to promote organizational effectiveness and sustainable leadership practices.
  • Develop and implement programs that align with university priorities, support student learning, and advance holistic development through values-based leadership.
  • Partner with campus departments and external stakeholders to integrate FSL programming into broader student engagement and leadership development efforts.
  • Lead ongoing strategic planning efforts by setting measurable goals, identifying emerging needs, and developing long-term objectives that strengthen the FSL community.
  • Plan and execute signature FSL events such as Greek Week, National Hazing Prevention Week, and recruitment/intake programs.
  • Develop and implement FSL Standards of Excellence, including corresponding awards, recognition programs, and annual evaluations.
  • Remain current on local, regional, and national trends impacting fraternity and sorority life, incorporating best practices and research into policies, training, and advising. 

    Supervision (20%)

  • Provide direct supervision, mentorship, and performance management for the Coordinator of Fraternity and Sorority Life, ensuring alignment with divisional and departmental goals.
  • Establish clear expectations and performance benchmarks that support professional growth, accountability, and excellence in program delivery.
  • Conduct regular one-on-one meetings to provide feedback, coaching, and support in the Coordinator and graduate assistant's daily responsibilities and long-term professional development.
  • Create a structured supervision plan that emphasizes leadership development, strategic thinking, and effective management of student leaders and programs. 


    FSL Recruitment and New Member Development (20%)

  • Provide strategic leadership and support for all fraternity and sorority recruitment and intake processes, ensuring compliance with university, local, and inter/national organization laws and standards.
  • Review and approve new member education programs to ensure alignment with organizational values, risk management expectations, and educational best practices.
  • Design and facilitate workshops and training sessions for chapter and council leaders focused on recruitment strategy, member education, and retention.
  • Support the creation of values-based new member experiences that promote inclusion, academic success, and leadership growth.
  • Collaborate with governing councils and chapter leadership to assess and enhance recruitment effectiveness, participation, and outcomes.
  • Provide logistical coordination and resource support for departmental and council-led training initiatives, retreats, and leadership programs. 
     

    Education, Compliance and Operations (15%)

  • Develop and coordinate educational initiatives focused on hazing prevention, risk reduction, bystander intervention, and alcohol and other drug education.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on risk management and compliance issues within the FSL community, ensuring adherence to university policies, national organization guidelines, and relevant laws.
  • Create, audit, and maintain FSL standards and operational processes to ensure effective chapter management, accountability, and compliance.
  • Develop a comprehensive tracking system for leadership education, training participation, and compliance follow-up to ensure consistent implementation of expectations.
  • Collaborate with university partners to coordinate procurement, vendor compliance, and event management processes for FSL-related activities.
  • Support the councils in developing leadership goals, accountability structures, and assessment methods to promote measurable growth.
  • Stay informed on current legislation, university policies, and national best practices that impact fraternity and sorority operations.
