Job description

The Wesleyan Athletic Department, located in the Freeman Athletic Center, a state-of-the art-facility, is a member of the prestigious New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC). They sponsor 30 varsity sports and believe athletics plays an integral part in a Wesleyan scholar-athlete's liberal arts education. Highly trained and dedicated faculty coaches, administrators and staff work collaboratively and tirelessly to assist student-athletes in reaching their academic and athletic goals.

Reporting to the head coach of football, the assistant football coach will have primary duties in planning for training sessions and competition, providing input on player evaluation and recruiting as well as other decisions concerning team operations. This includes the vision to develop and implement a strategic plan for long-term growth and improvement of the football program at Wesleyan University.
Responsibilities include coaching and teaching (75% of expected effort) and administrative duties (25% of expected effort).
Coaching Responsibilities

  • Assist with instruction, planning, organizing and execution of practices and competition.
  • Provide video analysis for competition and practice sessions.
  • Evaluate athlete performance and progress to ensure peak performance during the season.
  • Oversee the mental and physical preparation of athletes for competition.
  • Assist in the development of conditioning programs.
  • Assist with team scouts and evaluation and provide game strategy recommendations.

Teaching Responsibilities

  • As a teaching fellow, assist physical education faculty members with classroom interaction.
  • Assist with out of class project work required for PE credit.


Recruiting Responsibilities

  • Oversee team recruiting efforts and identify and evaluate prospective student-athletes.
  • Attend permissible off campus recruiting events.
  • Manage team Front Rush recruiting database.
  • Coordinate on campus recruiting visits for prospective student-athletes.


Administrative Responsibilities

  • Provide academic support and monitor academic progress for student-athletes.
  • Participate in planning for alumni events including fundraising and or special functions.
  • Collaborate with the director of athletic fundraising.
  • Plan and execute team community service efforts.
  • Coordinate team travel for in/out of region trips.
  • Provide additional support for contest management as needed.


Other duties as assigned.

This is an on-campus position.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree with 2 years of coaching experience and/or experience in a graduate assistant program or an equivalent combination of experience, education, training, and/or distinguished collegiate athletic career experience.

Demonstrated knowledge of the daily operations of an intercollegiate football program.

Proven ability to effectively coach high level athletes.

Demonstrated ability to provide effective leadership to student-athletes to encourage both successful academic development and competitive performance.

Demonstrated commitment to work within a diverse environment and interact collegially with individuals of different backgrounds.

Proven analytical and problem-solving skills. Proficiency in MS Word and excel.

Ability to establish and maintain relationships and work effectively with internal and external constitutes.

Ability to work a non-traditional schedule, including nights and weekends.

Communication, organizational, interpersonal, and computer skills are essential.

Valid driver's license or ability to obtain one.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree or a degree in Athletic Administration and/or Advanced Level Coaching.
Experience coaching at the DivisionIIIlevel and orNESCACconference.
CurrentCPR/AED/First Aid certification.
Experience with intercollegiate contest management.
Experience with frontrush recruiting software.
Knowledge ofNESCACandNCAADivisionIIIrecruiting rules and regulations.
