Purpose
International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) is looking for a graduate student to assist our Student Immigration Advising (SIA) team. This team serves international students at UT, including degree-seeking students, degree-seeking sponsored students who are funded by foreign governments, organizations, and companies, and inbound reciprocal exchange students who study at UT for one or two semesters,. Tasks include administrative and organizational work as well as some communication and event planning. We are looking for a creative and detail-oriented graduate student who is excited about working with diverse populations and committed to providing excellent service to students. This position is an opportunity for a graduate student interested in international education, admissions, program development, and even improving work-flow processes.
Responsibilities
  • Events and programming: The GA for the SIA team will report directly to the SIA Senior Program Coordinator to plan and execute events for international students, including proposing programs, scheduling presenters and activities, managing surveys and RSVPs, and coordinating catering, logistics, and technical components.
  • Support of inbound exchange program: The GA will also support UT's inbound exchange program, assisting with correspondence, the nomination, application, and review processes, and the review of forms used to issue immigration documents. The GA will guide incoming students through the admissions process via email, maintain accurate records in international student databases and Excel files, and manage the Exchange Facebook group to build student engagement.
  • Program assessment and resource creation: Beyond these administrative functions, the GA will assume a more analytical and strategic role to advance the SIA team's mission, with an emphasis on professional growth in data analysis, report writing, and resource development. The GA will assess the effectiveness of SIA programs and services, using both quantitative data and benchmarking against peer institutions to identify opportunities for improvement. This includes analyzing trends across multiple data sources, translating findings into clear, actionable reports for the SIA team, and using those insights to shape recommendations for program design. The GA will also contribute to the development of new resources on immigration and life in the U.S., applying research and student feedback to ensure materials are accurate, relevant, and responsive to student needs. Through these projects, the GA will build skills in data-informed decision-making, written communication, and resource design that extend beyond the role's administrative.
  • Documentation and improvement of processes:The GA will maintain comprehensive internal records of updated procedures. Furthermore, the GA will be encouraged to research and suggest ways to improve our workflow and streamline processes to create clear information for students and our partners.

Required Qualifications
Must be a current or admitted graduate student at The University of Texas at Austin. Experience working directly with college/university students. Ability to demonstrate initiative, strong administrative, organizational, research, and problem-solving skills. Ability to work with a variety of populations and to work collaboratively within a team atmosphere. Advanced oral and written communication skills. Ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment. Ability to work with sensitive and confidential information.
Preferred Qualifications
Ability to stay for at least two academic years; relevant international experience; experience working with international students or scholars; advanced Excel skills; experience building communication plans; interest in innovative communications (e.g., developing pre-arrival webinars).
Salary Range
$20.00 per hour
