Gradle information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Gradle Build Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Gradle Build Engineer, you need a strong background in software development, build automation, and proficiency with scripting languages such as Groovy or Kotlin. Expertise in using Gradle, continuous integration tools like Jenkins, and version control systems such as Git is typically required. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you troubleshoot builds and collaborate across development teams. These skills ensure efficient, reliable software builds and streamlined development workflows.

What are the common challenges faced by Gradle build engineers, and how can they be overcome?

Gradle build engineers often encounter challenges such as managing complex build scripts, optimizing build performance, and ensuring compatibility across various environments. To address these issues, it's important to regularly refactor and modularize build logic, leverage Gradle’s built-in caching and parallelization features, and maintain clear documentation of build processes. Collaboration with development and DevOps teams is also crucial to align build strategies with project goals and infrastructure requirements.

What is the difference between Gradle vs Maven?

FeatureGradleMaven
Build Tool TypeFlexible, Groovy/Kotlin-basedXML-based, declarative
ConfigurationCode-based, customizableXML configuration files
PerformanceFaster incremental buildsSlower, less efficient for large projects
Learning CurveModerate, requires scripting knowledgeSteeper, XML syntax
UsageModern projects, Android developmentTraditional Java projects

Gradle and Maven are popular build tools used in software development. Gradle offers more flexibility and faster build times, especially for complex or large projects, while Maven provides a more straightforward, XML-based configuration. Developers choose Gradle for modern, customizable builds and Maven for simpler, standardized project setups.

What is Gradle?

Gradle is an open-source build automation tool used primarily for Java, Kotlin, and Android projects. It automates the process of compiling code, managing dependencies, running tests, and packaging applications, making it easier to build and maintain software projects. Gradle uses a Groovy or Kotlin-based domain-specific language (DSL) to configure projects and can handle both small and large codebases efficiently. It is widely adopted due to its flexibility, performance, and ability to integrate with other tools and systems.

Job description

Who We Are

AI is changing how software gets built. Code production is becoming a commodity. The focus is shifting from writing code to orchestrating, verifying, and governing change - and the toolchain is the new constraint.

Gradle is at the center of this shift. We build Develocity, a first-of-its-kind toolchain observability and intelligence platform used by some of the world's leading software organizations - Netflix, Airbnb, Spotify, SAP, major global banks, and hundreds more. Develocity helps software teams achieve delivery excellence through deep observability, build and test acceleration, and AI-powered intelligence across the entire toolchain - for Gradle Build Tool, Apache Maven, sbt, npm, and Python.

We are an AI-native company. AI is not a feature we're bolting on - it's central to how we build, how we think about our product, and where we're heading. We're investing deeply in making Develocity's unique data and decades of domain expertise accessible to both humans and AI agents, with trust, evidence, and explainability at the core of everything we build.

We have partnered with the Apache Software Foundation, the Commonhaus Foundation, the Scala Center, the Micronaut Foundation, and other OSS projects like Spring, Quarkus, Kotlin, JUnit, AndroidX, and many more to bring the values of Develocity also to the OSS Community.

Please check out DPE University for more Develocity product technical information.

Our Values

Seek to Understand: Everything starts with listening and understanding, and we strive to understand different viewpoints, problems, and motivations. Before we take action, we ensure we truly grasp the challenges, perspectives, and goals.

Know the Why: We approach our work with a clear sense of purpose, ensuring every step is deliberate and focused. We take meaningful action with urgency, but never at the expense of thoughtful consideration.

Innovate & Iterate: We embrace challenges and are not afraid to try new things, even if they might fail. With deep understanding and a clear purpose, we can develop creative and bold solutions to tackle challenges.

Own the Outcome: We are empowered to take initiative and we maintain transparency in our work and its outcomes. When we execute, we take responsibility for our decisions, measure the success of our innovations, and learn from the results.

Who You Are

As a Field Engineer at Gradle, you're the hands-on technical expert who connects our product to our customers. You advocate new approaches, drive adoption of new products or features with prospects and customers, build compelling demos that bring Develocity to life for their use case, and work alongside Sales, Sales Engineering, Product Management, and Engineering to uncover new opportunities and shape how the product evolves.

ResponsibilitiesAI & product exploration
  • Partner with the AI strategy team to find where Develocity's data and domain expertise can power AI-driven toolchain observability.
  • Stay current with the AI tooling landscape - LLMs, coding agents, agentic workflows - and evaluate their impact on the software supply chain.
  • Work with Product Management to investigate new product areas, evaluate emerging trends, and turn customer insights into roadmap input.
Customer engagement
  • Serve as the technical expert in key customer engagements - demonstrating capabilities, articulating value, and gathering feedback for beta and early access programs.
  • Build rapid prototypes to validate new use cases and product hypotheses.
  • Create tailored demos that bring Develocity to life in the customer's environment.
  • Help Sales show prospects how Develocity fits their stack and solves their problems.
Enablement & feedback
  • Develop go-to-market content - product positioning, demos, training - to enable Sales and Marketing on new features and product vision.
  • Channel customer feedback back to Product Management, Product Marketing, and Engineering.
  • Travel to customer sites and events (~20%).
Minimum Qualifications
  • 10+ years of experience working in Field Engineering, Platform Engineering, Solutions Engineering, Technical Consulting or a combination of these, selling to enterprise environments.
  • Hands-on  experience as a software engineer.
  • Hands-on experience with AI-powered products, agentic workflows, or LLM-based tooling - either building them or deeply integrating them into product strategy.
  • A "Product Journey" and "Customer Journey" mindset with a deep desire to deploy impactful solutions.
  • Excellent at prioritizing complex activities autonomously in the best interest of the Sales and Product Management teams.
  • Strong work ethic and can-do attitude.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity and technical understanding of some, not necessarily all, DevOps SDLC tools, SDLC supply chain observability and build tools in particular:
    • Build tools (Maven, Gradle, Android, Bazel, npm, Python build/packaging tools, Docker, etc.)
    • CI/CD tooling (Jenkins, GitLab, TeamCity, GitHub Actions, Harness, ArgoCD, etc.)
    • Container technologies (Docker, Kubernetes, OpenShift, etc.)
    • Artifact repositories (Artifactory, Nexus, etc.)
    • Observability tooling (Datadog, Splunk, Dynatrace, etc.)
    • SDLC Supply Chain Security
What We Offer
  • Work at the intersection of AI and developer tooling - one of the most consequential shifts in how software gets built
  • Be part of a company that is actively building with AI and for the AI future, not just talking about AI
  • Ability to work in a remote-first environment with flexible working hours.
  • Work on a fast-growing product with a clear vision for the future.
  • Close collaboration with an ambitious and experienced team and the opportunity to learn from them regardless of your experience level.
  • Opportunities for growth in your career and in leadership responsibilities.
  • In-person meetings, such as our annual company offsite (where previous locations have included France, Spain, and Italy), team meetings, and onboardings.
  • Contribute to leading solutions in the new industry of Developer Productivity Engineering and work with cutting-edge DPE tools and practices.
  • Competitive salaries and equity grants.

Location
  • Remote from anywhere in North America.
  • While our team works remotely and is spread across the globe, we deeply value daily interactions and collaboration.
