Summary Statement Help build and maintain the infrastructure that keeps Boise running - while enjoying a 4/10 work schedule. Essential Functions Operates heavy power-driven equipment such as backhoes, track hoes, loaders, dump trucks and related machinery in the maintenance and repair of wastewater collection, geothermal and pressurized irrigation systems, flood control ponds, stormwater and drainage conveyance systems and other city infrastructure. Inspects equipment to ensure it is safe to operate. Performs minor adjustments and emergency repairs as required.
Loads, moves and hauls dirt, gravel, asphalt and soil. Performs maintenance on wastewater, geothermal, grounds, asphalt, concrete surfaces, drainage lines and facilities. Performs heavy, skilled, semi-skilled and manual labor, construction and maintenance when heavy equipment is not utilized.
Excavates to construct, locate, diagnose and repair problems in city utilities and infrastructure. Installs and replaces pipes, fittings, taps, valves and related items. Ensures compliance with all requirements governed by the National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permits when working at wastewater treatment plants, on geothermal systems and stormwater drains.
Works closely with operations, management and coworkers to plan and schedule projects and relevant requirements. Maintains records and data of work performed locations, notes and related information. Uses blueprints, construction drawings, transit and grade rods to locate areas that need maintenance or repairs.
Uses utility computer software. Provides answers or guidance to questions and concerns from the public while working in the field. Provides training to employees.
Acts as a first responder when on call for emergencies involving sewer, geothermal, irrigation and water systems, lift stations and other city utilities. Troubleshoots causes of problems and identifies repairs needed. Provides input to management when planning and implementing projects.
Serves as a crew lead backup. Performs other duties as assigned. Nothing in this job description restricts management's right to assign or reassign duties and responsibilities to this position at any time.
Requirements Additional Required Knowledge, Experience, And Training Knowledge of: standard practices, methods and materials used in underground utility maintenance; safe operation and basic maintenance of construction machinery and heavy equipment; excavation, grading and earth-moving practices; auxiliary mechanical apparatus commonly carried on heavy power-driven equipment; traffic laws and ordinances involved in heavy equipment operation; and computer usage including related software. Ability to:; safely operate a variety of heavy equipment to excavate, grade and move earth and materials; comprehend information in operation manuals for all pieces of equipment used; read and interpret blueprints, construction drawings and maps; lead and direct the work of others; develop and maintain effective working relationships with individuals at all levels of the organization; communicate effectively in the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance; and perform all essential functions as assigned by an authorized employee, supervisor and/or manager with or without reasonable accommodation. Individuals must be capable of operating vehicles safely and have an acceptable driving record.
Preferred Knowledge, Experience, And Training Four years of experience performing construction and maintenance using heavy power-driven equipment in a public utility setting on geothermal, sewer, irrigation, drainage or wastewater collection systems. Experience and/or training in confined space entry, wastewater collection systems, waterways and stormwater systems. Working knowledge of Idaho Standards for Public Works Construction (ISPWC), Occupational Safety Health Administration (OSHA), and Idaho Industrial Commission safety standards.
