Job description

Grading Superintendent / Grading Coordinator

DCS Contracting is looking for a strong grading leader to help oversee our grading division.

This is an important role for our company as we continue to grow. We are looking for someone who can focus specifically on grading operations and help lead our Grading Foreman, crews, manpower, equipment, production, safety, and quality.

We are open to hiring an experienced Grading Superintendent who can step into the role now, or a strong Grading Coordinator / Grading Foreman-level candidate who has the right field knowledge, leadership ability, communication skills, and drive to grow into the role. The right person will have the opportunity to learn directly from our Field Operations Manager and help carry forward the way DCS plans, leads, and executes grading work.

What You'll Do

  • Help oversee DCS's grading division and grading field operations.
  • Lead, support, and mentor Grading Foreman.
  • Coordinate manpower, equipment, trucking, materials, traffic control, surveying, testing, and other project resources.
  • Use project cost models, production goals, crew setups, and schedule needs to help allocate resources efficiently.
  • Work closely with the Field Operations Manager, Project Superintendents, Project Managers, and other trade leaders.
  • Review grading plans, project requirements, schedules, production goals, survey needs, testing needs, and field needs.
  • Visit jobsites regularly to review safety, quality, production, schedule, and crew needs.
  • Help Foreman plan ahead and build efficient 3-week lookahead schedules.
  • Identify issues early and help solve problems before they impact the job.
  • Monitor productions, crew setups, equipment needs, trucking needs, and project progress.
  • Ensure Foreman are completing daily paperwork, safety documentation, and job reporting accurately.
  • Help train, develop, and grow grading team members.
  • Help interview, hire, train, coach, and develop grading team members.
  • Partner with Operations leadership and HR on performance issues, accountability, and staffing decisions within the grading division.
  • Promote a field culture built on safety, accountability, communication, and doing the job right.

What We're Looking For

  • Strong heavy civil grading/earthwork experience.
  • Experience with site grading, mass grading, subgrade, compaction, drainage, equipment coordination, trucking, traffic control, survey coordination, testing coordination, and field production.
  • Foreman, General Foreman, Superintendent, Coordinator, or similar field leadership experience.
  • Ability to read plans, understand grades, understand survey/staking needs, and help crews execute work correctly.
  • Ability to understand cost models, crew productions, equipment needs, and schedule impacts to help plan work efficiently.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work well with Foreman, crews, PMs, Superintendents, leadership, inspectors, vendors, surveyors, testing companies, traffic control providers, and clients.
  • Someone who is organized, proactive, and can plan ahead.
  • A leader who can hold people accountable while also training and supporting them.
  • Someone with credibility in the field and the drive to get things done.
  • General heavy civil construction background is a plus.
  • Experience with HCSS Heavy Job, Microsoft Office, or other construction tools is a plus.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish is a plus.

Why This Role Matters

This is not just another Superintendent position. This role is part of a long-term leadership transition within our Operations team. The person we hire will have the opportunity to help shape the future of our grading division, build strong relationships with our Foreman and crews, and grow into a key leadership seat within the company.
