MGT120H5 Introduction to Financial Accounting (Emergency)

Introduction to the theory and concepts of financial accounting. Students learn how to construct and interpret financial statements. Topics include an introductory understanding of accounting and the context within which accounting occurs.

Must have completed and achieved a minimum grade of "A" in MGT120/MGT220/MGT224 or equivalent course.

Preference given to those with prior coordinator experience in this course. Advanced degree desirable, proven course administration skills, and experience with management of large size courses. Professional demeanor and ability to work effectively with a diverse student body. Prior experience as a TA for MGT120H5. Strong written and oral communication skills. Must be able to meet with instructor at UTM during business hours. Courseware support competencies: must be comfortable with internet- based course and grade delivery. Student services experience. Experience in setting up and delivering an Excel assignment and Data Analytics assignment.

This course will cover personal finance topics for individuals at all stages of life. Topics include budgeting, borrowing, investing, insurance and retirement planning. Tax issues associated with these topics is also covered including the basics of personal income tax. Case studies are used extensively to illustrate the material.

Must have completed and achieved a superior grade in MGT150 or equivalent course.

Preference given to applicants with previous TA experience in this or equivalent course(s).

MGT223H5 Managerialย  Accounting I (Emergency)

Covers conceptual and analytical foundations of cost accounting and uses of accounting by management. Cost concepts for product costing and decision making provide an understanding of the uses of accounting information by management. Costing and control concepts are analyzed to equip students with tools for establishing costing systems and to make decisions.

Must have completed and achieved a minimum grade of "A" in MGT223 or equivalent course.

Professional accounting designation, or enrolled at an advanced level, in a professional accounting program, TA, or teaching experience in an equivalent course.

MGT225 Intermediate Accounitng II (Emergency)

Expands the analysis of financial accounting beyond MGT220H5. Technical topics include liabilities, shareholders' equity, complex financial instruments, accounting for leases, measuring and reporting pensions and earnings per share. The emphasis is on analysis and developing judgment.

Must have completed and achieved a minimum grade of "A" in MGT225 or equivalent course.

Professional accounting certification or B.Com with accounting concentration (CPA preferred). Strong written and oral communication skills. Must be available to teach at scheduled tutorial times, hold occasional office hours during afternoons on days before tests and able to meet weekly with instructor at UTM during business hours.

A study of the concepts and theory underlying audit practice. Students are introduced to the CICA Handbook recommendations and guidelines for assurance. Practical examples are used to help students develop skills in exercising professional judgment.

A Bachelor degree in Business/Commerce with relevant auditing courses and CPA with practical audit experience. Preference given to those with prior TA experience in this and/or equivalent course. Current knowledge of CAS.

Professional accounting designation with CPA Audit experience and detailed understanding of CAS. Experience in marking professional examinations is an asset.

MGT325H5 Critical Thinking, Analysis and Decision Making I (Emergency)

This course introduces students to integration of different areas of studies, stressing the pervasive competencies and critical thinking skills required from business school graduates, future professional accountants and advisors. This course focuses on developing students' decision-making and written communication skills.

Must have passed the CFE or UFE.

Prefer prior experience with grading CFE-type case-based exams. Experience with giving written feedback on student case-type assignments. Excellent knowledge of English grammar and writing. Good understanding of business communications. Some understanding of the writing elements required for accounting exams such as the Common Final Exam. Strong organizational skills.

MGT326 Advanced Accounting (Emergency)

The emphasis in this course is on accounting issues and practices relating to intercompany investments, foreign currency transactions, investments, not-for-profit organizations and emerging accounting issues where appropriate. Assigned material includes cases to ensure that the user impact of accounting choices is appreciated.

Must have completed and achieved a minimum grade of "A" in MGT426 or equivalent course. Must be available to conduct tutorial classes during scheduled times

Preferred, experience grading MGT426. Preference given to applicants with previous TA experience in this or equivalent course(s) in marking accounting tests, assignments and exams. Preference given to UofT Graduate students.

Must have completed and achieved a minimum grade of "A" in MGT363 or equivalent course.

A Bachelor degree in Business/Commerce or related discipline, with a specialization in Human Resource Management (HRM) and/or Industrial Relations. Demonstrated expertise in the subject. Preference: PhD or MA students in HRM/Organizational Behaviour, and Industrial-Organizational Psychology.

Professional accounting designation with practical audit experience and a detailed understanding of Canadian Auditing Standards (CAS). Experience in marking professional examinations is an asset.

This course is an extension of the study of areas covered in the introductory audit course and will include the application of risk and materiality to more advanced topic areas with a focus on digitized information. Other topics include special reports, future-oriented financial information and prospectuses. The course will incorporate the use of data analytics in auditing and will explore how to analyze financial data in order to assist in audit engagements.

Must have completed and achieved a minimum grade of "A" in MGT422 or equivalent course.

CPA with specialty EDP auditing (CISA preferred) or MMPA student.

MGT423H5 Canadian Income Taxation I (Emergency)

This is the first of two courses in federal income tax law. It is designed to give the student a basic understanding of the Income Tax Act and its administration. This is achieved by applying the law to practical problems and cases. Topics covered include administration of the tax system, employment income, business and property income, capital gains, other income and deductions, computation of taxable income and taxes payable for individuals. The GST/HST implications, where relevant, will also be discussed. The two course sequence (MGT423H5 and MGT429H5) have been designed to provide participants with coverage of the tax content required by the professional accounting bodies.

Must have completed and achieved a minimum grade of "A" in MGT423 or equivalent course.

Two tax courses in Canadian Income Taxation with a grade of A- or better. Work experience in tax is preferred.
