What is the difference between Gradient vs Data Analyst?

AspectGradientData Analyst
Required CredentialsTypically requires a background in machine learning, data science, or related fields, often with programming skillsUsually requires a degree in statistics, mathematics, or business, with proficiency in Excel, SQL, and data visualization tools
Work EnvironmentPrimarily in tech companies, startups, or research labs focusing on AI and machine learning projectsCommonly in corporate, finance, healthcare, or marketing sectors analyzing business data
Employer & Industry UsageUsed in AI development, machine learning projects, and data science teamsUsed across industries for business insights, reporting, and decision-making

While both Gradient and Data Analyst roles involve working with data, Gradient focuses more on machine learning and AI development, requiring programming and technical expertise. Data Analysts primarily interpret and visualize data to support business decisions, often with less emphasis on coding. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or job search focus.

What are Gradient jobs?

Gradient jobs typically refer to roles related to machine learning, artificial intelligence, or technology companies named 'Gradient.' In the context of machine learning, gradients are mathematical tools used in optimization algorithms, such as gradient descent, which is fundamental to training AI models. Professionals working in Gradient jobs might focus on developing, implementing, or optimizing these algorithms, or they could be employed by organizations that provide AI infrastructure or platforms, like Gradient from Paperspace. The responsibilities can range from research and development to software engineering, depending on the specific job role and employer.

What are some common challenges faced by machine learning engineers working on gradient-based optimization techniques?

Machine learning engineers focusing on gradient-based optimization often encounter challenges such as vanishing or exploding gradients, which can hinder model training, especially in deep neural networks. Debugging issues related to convergence, learning rate selection, and ensuring numerical stability are key aspects of the role. Collaboration with data scientists and researchers is essential to refine models and experiment with different optimization strategies. Staying updated with the latest advancements in algorithms and techniques also helps address these challenges effectively.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Machine Learning Engineer specializing in gradient-based optimization, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Machine Learning Engineer focused on gradient-based optimization, you need a solid background in mathematics, statistics, and computer science, often with a degree in a related field. Expertise in frameworks like TensorFlow or PyTorch, proficiency in Python, and knowledge of optimization algorithms are typically required, with certifications in data science or machine learning considered valuable. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication help you collaborate and explain complex concepts. These skills ensure that you can design, implement, and refine machine learning models that rely on gradient-based methods for optimal performance.

Job description

This is a fully remote opportunity.

Gradient AI:

Gradient AI is revolutionizing Group Health and P&C insurance with AI-powered solutions that help insurers predict risk more accurately, improve profitability, and automate underwriting and claims. Our SaaS platform taps into one of the industry's largest data lakesโ€”tens of millions of policies and claimsโ€”to deliver deep, actionable insights. Trusted by leading carriers, MGAs, TPAs, and self-insured employers, Gradient AI has grown rapidly since our founding in 2018. Backed by $56M in Series C funding, we're scaling fastโ€”and it's an exciting time to join the team.

About the Role:

We are looking for a Senior Solutions Consultant to work with our sales and customer service team to drive effective implementations of our predictive analytics AI/ML solutions for underwriting and claims health clients. With a background in Health Insurance & Medical Stop Loss, this person will draw on deep domain experience to ensure we ask the right questions, use the best tools, articulate the best value propositions and provide the appropriate context; as well as to ensure the solutions we provide are on-point, value-add, and actionable.

How you will make an impact:

  • Support the Health sales team by leading the creation, development, and ongoing maintenance of sales demo environments and presentation materials.
  • Arm the sales team with client success stories, KPI analyses, and reports that quantify client ROI
  • Participate on sales calls, providing demonstrations of our solutions and technical support for explanations of our products
  • Lead proof of concept (POC) engagements with goal of turning POCs into production clients.
  • Field questions that range from technical understanding of ML models to general understanding of implementation tasks and milestones
  • Lead discovery meetings with prospective clients to map underwriting processes and identify operational and financial enhancement opportunities
  • Validate report and presentations of findings to describe the value of Gradient AI's solutions
  • Provide direction on technical aspects of implementations to ensure Statements of Work align with the clients' intentions and our team's delivery expectations
  • Support internal initiatives that further organization product development.

Skills needed to succeed:

  • 6+ years of experience in a health underwriting or actuarial role that includes job responsibilities such as stop loss, underwriting, and/or pricing experience.
  • ASA or FSA required
  • Commercial/employer group health experience is required.
  • Must be proficient in Excel, as well as strong experience using PowerPoint or other presentation tools.
  • Experience working with a sales team and performing client-facing duties is preferred.

What We Offer:

  • A fun, team-oriented startup culture.
  • Generous stock options - we all get to own a piece of what we're building.
  • Unlimited vacation days.
  • Flexible schedule that supports working from home.
  • Full benefits package includes medical, dental, vision, 401k, paid paternal leave, and more.
  • Ample opportunities to learn and take on new responsibilities.

We are an equal opportunity employer.

Salary Range: $160,000-190,000 base salary annually.
This role is also eligible for an annual performance bonus, equity grant, and a comprehensive benefits package. In accordance with the Massachusetts Pay Transparency Law, we are providing a good-faith salary range for this position at the time of posting. The actual salary offered will depend on the level at which the candidate is hired, as well as their experience, skills, qualifications, and location. Compensation may grow over time through merit-based increases, promotions, and company-wide adjustments. If your salary expectations fall outside this range, we still encourage you to apply so we can have a conversation.
