What is GPU computing?

GPU computing refers to the use of a Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) alongside a Central Processing Unit (CPU) to accelerate computational tasks. GPUs are highly efficient at performing parallel operations, making them ideal for complex calculations in fields like machine learning, scientific simulations, and graphics rendering. Unlike traditional CPUs, GPUs can process thousands of threads simultaneously, greatly speeding up tasks that involve large-scale data processing. This makes GPU computing essential in industries requiring high-performance computing solutions.

What are some common challenges faced by GPU computing professionals when optimizing code for parallel processing?

One of the main challenges in GPU Computing is efficiently restructuring code to leverage the massive parallelism that GPUs offer. Professionals often encounter issues with memory management, synchronization between threads, and minimizing data transfer between CPU and GPU to avoid bottlenecks. Additionally, debugging parallel code can be complex, as errors may not manifest consistently across runs. Collaborating with software engineers, data scientists, and hardware specialists is typical to ensure optimal performance and scalability in real-world applications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a GPU computing specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a GPU Computing Specialist, you need expertise in parallel programming, computer architecture, and a strong foundation in mathematics and algorithms, often supported by a degree in computer science, engineering, or related fields. Familiarity with programming languages like C/C++, CUDA, OpenCL, and experience with GPU hardware and high-performance computing systems are essential. Problem-solving abilities, analytical thinking, and strong collaboration skills help you innovate and work effectively on complex computational projects. These skills ensure efficient development, optimization, and deployment of GPU-accelerated solutions crucial for scientific, engineering, and AI applications.

What is the difference between Gpu Computing vs Data Scientist?

AspectGpu ComputingData Scientist
Required CredentialsKnowledge of GPU architectures, programming skills in CUDA or OpenCLDegree in Computer Science, Statistics, or related fields; strong programming skills
Work EnvironmentHigh-performance computing environments, data centers, research labsOffice settings, research institutions, tech companies
Industry UsageMachine learning, scientific simulations, graphics renderingData analysis, predictive modeling, business insights

Gpu Computing focuses on leveraging GPU hardware for high-speed processing tasks, often requiring specialized programming skills. Data Scientists analyze data to extract insights, using various tools and statistical methods. While both roles involve data and computing, Gpu Computing is more hardware and performance-oriented, whereas Data Scientists focus on data analysis and modeling.

Job description

Position Summary...At Walmart Global Tech, we're building the next generation of AI infrastructure that enables autonomous software agents to safely execute code and tools at enterprise scale. This platform provides the secure compute foundation that powers AI-driven development and intelligent automation across Walmart.
As a Distinguished Software Engineer, you'll define the long-term technical strategy and architecture for a next-generation compute platform that combines secure execution environments, micro-VM isolation, serverless runtimes, Kubernetes, and modern software delivery practices. This is a highly strategic individual contributor role where you'll solve complex distributed systems challenges while influencing engineering direction across multiple organizations.
You'll partner with senior engineering leaders to design foundational infrastructure that enables teams across Walmart to build, deploy, and operate AI-powered applications securely, efficiently, and at massive scale.
About the Team
The Walmart Cloud Native Platform team is responsible for building Walmart's secure execution platform for AI-powered applications and autonomous software agents.
Our platform combines secure sandboxed execution, micro-VM technology, serverless computing, Kubernetes, and modern CI/CD capabilities into a unified developer platform. We own the platform end-to-end—from secure runtime infrastructure through deployment automation—while delivering a seamless developer experience for engineering teams across Walmart.
Our mission is to make it simple, scalable, and secure to run AI-powered workloads in production while providing the foundational infrastructure that accelerates innovation across Walmart Global Tech. What you'll do...
  • Define the long-term technical vision and architecture for Walmart's secure AI compute platform.
  • Lead the design of highly scalable distributed systems that combine serverless execution, secure runtime environments, GPU and cloud-native infrastructure.
  • Architect secure execution environments for AI-generated and untrusted workloads, including workload isolation, networking, identity, secrets management, and resource governance.
  • Drive innovation in virtualization technologies, micro-VM platforms, Kubernetes, and cloud-native infrastructure.
  • Improve platform performance by optimizing startup latency, scalability, resource utilization, and operational efficiency.
  • Design resilient CI/CD platforms supporting GitOps, progressive delivery, automated rollback, and software supply chain security.
  • Establish engineering standards for reliability, observability, security, and operational excellence across the platform.
  • Mentor Principal and Staff Engineers through architecture reviews, technical leadership, and engineering best practices.
  • Influence technical strategy across multiple organizations while partnering with Product, Infrastructure, Security, and Platform Engineering teams.
  • Contribute to Walmart's technical leadership through open-source collaboration, technical publications, patents, and industry engagement.
What You'll Bring
  • Extensive experience designing, building, and operating large-scale distributed systems in production.
  • Deep expertise with Kubernetes, containers, serverless, GPU, statefulset, CICD, git ops, AgentSandbox and cloud-native platform technologies.
  • Strong understanding of operating systems, networking, virtualization, distributed systems, and security fundamentals.
  • Expert-level programming experience in Go, Rust, Java, or similar languages.
  • Proven ability to define technical strategy and influence architecture across multiple engineering organizations.
Experience with one or more of the following:
  • Secure execution environments, workload isolation, or virtualization technologies such as Firecracker, Cloud Hypervisor, KVM, QEMU, or similar platforms.
  • Serverless computing platforms, event-driven architectures, and scalable runtime systems.
  • AI infrastructure, LLM platforms, agentic systems, AI runtime platforms, or secure execution environments for AI workloads.
  • CI/CD platforms, GitOps, progressive delivery, software supply chain security, artifact signing, or policy-as-code.
  • Multi-tenant platform architecture, service mesh, zero-trust security, and cloud-native observability.
  • Building resilient, highly available infrastructure supporting mission-critical production services.
  • Technical leadership demonstrated through open-source contributions, patents, technical publications, conference presentations, or industry collaboration.
