Position Description
The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for safely operating heavy machinery on heavy civil construction projects, including roadway, underground utilities, concrete paving, earthwork, and infrastructure work. This role supports field operations by operating equipment such as excavators, dozers, loaders, graders, rollers, scrapers, and other heavy equipment to perform grading, excavation, material placement, and site preparation activities.
Working under the direction of Foremen and Superintendents, the Heavy Equipment Operator plays a critical role in maintaining production efficiency, ensuring quality workmanship, and supporting safe jobsite operations while contributing to successful project execution.
Position Requirements
  • Minimum 3+ years of heavy civil equipment operating experience.
  • Experience operating one or more of the following: excavator, dozer, motor grader, loader, scraper, roller, or backhoe.
  • Strong understanding of heavy civil construction practices, including grading, excavation, and material handling.
  • Ability to follow grade stakes, plans, and field direction.
  • Strong commitment to jobsite safety and OSHA-compliant work practices.
  • Ability to perform daily equipment inspections and basic preventive maintenance.
  • Knowledge of safe trenching, lifting, and equipment operation procedures.
  • Ability to recognize underground utilities and maintain safe working distances.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Willingness to work extended hours and travel to project sites as needed.
  • Valid driver's license required; CDL preferred but not required (if that fits your company).
  • Experience on TxDOT or municipal infrastructure projects.
  • GPS/machine control experience (Trimble, Topcon, Leica, etc.).
  • Ability to assist crews when equipment is idle.
