Volunteer Manager

Openings: 1 full-time position | Location: New London, Connecticut (on-site) | Status: Key Personnel

Position Summary

The Volunteer Manager recruits, coordinates, trains, schedules, and retains the volunteers and docents who support Government-approved museum operations. The role builds an inclusive, reliable volunteer program while following Government vetting procedures and preserving the legal distinction between volunteers and employees.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Recruit diverse volunteers for Government-approved roles, including gallery docents, museum ambassadors, education assistants, and administrative support.

  • Coordinate interviews and volunteer-vetting submissions under Government procedures; final access and suitability determinations remain with the Government.

  • Develop and deliver approved orientation and training on museum history, mission, visitor services, emergency safety, and assigned roles.

  • Match volunteer skills and interests to operational needs, manage shift schedules, and maintain accurate volunteer-hour and contribution records.

  • Maintain volunteer communications, recognition activities, and feedback loops that improve retention and operational readiness.

  • Coordinate with the Education Program Manager on volunteer support for STEM and history programs.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor degree in human resources, social sciences, communications, museum studies, or a related field.

  • Two to four years of volunteer management, community outreach, or program-coordination experience, preferably in a nonprofit or cultural setting.

  • Proficiency with volunteer-management databases, scheduling, training/orientation delivery, and community engagement.

  • Working understanding of volunteer-versus-employee labor considerations and appropriate performance-management boundaries for volunteer programs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certified in Volunteer Administration (CVA).

  • Museum, cultural-institution, military-history, public-attraction, or community-service program experience.

  • Public speaking, conflict resolution, multigenerational communication, recognition-program, and volunteer-retention experience.
