Job description

School Crossing Guard

Directs and assists school children to use crosswalks in streets and traffic intersections to ensure safe travel to and from school.

Examples of duties include:

  • Assisting children to cross the street during peak school traffic hours at designated school zone areas.
  • Regulating vehicular traffic at designated crosswalks to enhance the safety of school age children.
  • Establishing rapport with children using crosswalks to garner support for safety efforts.
  • Demonstrating proper signals and using issued equipment to assist in traffic control.
  • Monitoring and directing children to ensure they walk in designated crossing areas.
  • Reporting issues or malfunctions of school signals to supervisor.
  • Directing inquiries, complaints, and concerns by the general public to supervisor.
  • Reporting unsafe, hazardous, and perilous conditions to supervisor and contacting local authorities in case of an emergency.
  • Maintaining a professional working relationship with Town staff.
  • Maintaining a positive and friendly demeanor in dealing with the general public, including children.
  • Using online application for tracking hours worked.
  • Following Town, department, and division policies and procedures.
  • Keeping supervisor informed of work activities.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

Minimum qualifications include:

  • A valid Texas driver's license and compliance with Town policy, or reliable transportation.
  • At least 18 years old.
  • A High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) is preferred.
  • Ability to read, see, hear, talk, write, in close proximity to approaching traffic.
  • Ability to stand and walk continuously for up to one hour per shift.
  • Ability to carry and raise an object over-the-head weighing up to five (5) pounds upright, continuously, and repeatedly for 1 to 2 minutes at a time.
  • Ability to bend arms and push and/or pull a child weighing up to 100 pounds.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, to include all shifts and sites necessary to accommodate school crossing guard schedule.

Must submit to and pass a post-offer, non-regulated drug test and thorough background checks (including criminal history).

Desired qualifications include:

  • Knowledge of safe crossing guard procedures.
  • Ability to communicate well verbally.
  • Ability to perceive and respond appropriately and timely to potential hazardous, uncertain, and emergency situations.
  • Ability to bend from the waist and/or twist.
  • Ability to work in extreme weather conditions, including exposure to extreme heat, cold, and inclement weather.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective communication with Town employees and the general public, to include children.
  • Ability to travel to and from assigned school crossing locations.
  • Ability to track hours worked via online application.
