Reports To:                 Shelter Program Manager
FLSA Status:                 Hourly / Non-Exempt
Employment Status:  Full-Time (32 to 40 hours a week)

Shift:                                 Must be able to work Day Shift 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. and/or Swing Shift -

2 p.m. to 10 p.m. based on organizational need.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create a Welcoming Environment: Provide a safe, friendly, and respectful atmosphere for guest families, volunteers, and partners.
  • Support Families in Crisis: Offer compassionate listening, emotional support, and practical guidance to help families access services, resources, and case management.
  • Ensure Smooth Shelter Operations: Manage daily shelter tasks such as meal coordination, cleaning, laundry, and inventory, ensuring routines are followed and needs are met.
  • Lead by Example: Support and guide volunteers, interns, and fellow team members to ensure effective teamwork and adherence to protocols.
  • Document and Communicate: Maintain accurate records of guest interactions, incidents, and operational updates. Communicate clearly through internal tools like Slack and Google Suite.
  • Promote Safety and Stability: Monitor shelter activities, enforce safety protocols, and respond calmly and effectively in emergencies.
  • Engage Volunteers: Welcome and train volunteer groups, fostering a spirit of collaboration, gratitude, and shared purpose.


Qualifications

  • At least one year of experience working with families or individuals experiencing homelessness, housing instability, or crisis—paid or volunteer. Lived experience is valued.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Human Services, or a related field preferred but not required or equivalent experience.
  • Skills: Strong communication, remain calm under pressure, problem-solving and using sound judgement in a fast paced environment, time management, able to follow-through with tasks consistently, able to work independently and collaboratively with a team, and demonstrate emotional intelligence. Ability to engage diverse populations with empathy, dignity, and respect.
  • Technology: Comfortable using Google Suite, Slack, and basic data entry systems.
  • Driving is considered a condition of employment:  While working with families, you may need to drive families to appointments, etc. 
  • Language: Command of the English language and ability to clearly document case notes.
