Job description

Job#: 3041251
Job Description:
Robotics Lab Technician
Location: Onsite, Redmond campus
Duration: 3 months, potential to extend
We're building out a hands-on robotics lab in Redmond to support internal software and science teams working on robotics, embodied AI, autonomy, and manipulation. We run robots and compute systems, including robotic arms, mobile robots, drones, edge compute and GPU workstations, USB and GMSL2 cameras via ROS2 and Python libraries, and modular aluminum extrusion workcells.
This role supports lab operations and equipment: building, commissioning, documenting, maintaining, and troubleshooting the physical lab.
Hands-on engineering, not desk only.
Where you fit: This is a hands-on role focused on building, commissioning, documenting, and maintaining the physical lab. You'll work alongside the engineering team (who lead the design, core software, and final safety sign-off) and turn their designs into working, documented, dependable robot stations: assembling and wiring workcells, bringing up robot stations, keeping things documented and inventoried, and handling first-line troubleshooting.
What you'll do:
Build & commission workcells: assemble/commission modular aluminum-extrusion workcells; install mounts, cable trays, fixtures, cameras, sensors, safety lights, e-stops; finish commissioning and prepare cells for sign-off.
Per-cell power & networking: 120V power, PDUPS, routers/switches, cable management; bring up per-cell networking and contribute to network deployment and design as the lab's networking grows; integrate robotic arms and mobile robots behind the cell router.
Robots, cameras & compute: image/configure compute; Linux, IP config, ROS2 bring-up; connect robots/cameras/sensors/compute into repeatable stations (industrial PCs, edge compute, GPU workstations, USB and GMSL2 cameras).
Safety equipment: install/test e-stops, safety lights, zoning, teleop cameras against approved procedures; document results; no unsupervised robot operation until training/safety gates complete.
Document every station: as-built notes, URDF/descriptor, specs, IPs, photos, cable/power notes, SKU tracking, asset inventory, maintenance/calibration log.
Keep the lab running: first-line troubleshooting; maintain tool chests, consumables, 3D printers, drill press; support software/science teams; handle LiPo batteries safely; daily status; keep break/fix runbooks current.
Required:
Attention to detail, communication & organization (top priority): meticulous attention to detail; strong documentation; clear technical communication (verbal and written); obsessive about organization and keeping the lab in order. We prioritize this even more than raw hands-on skill.
Hands-on & electrical: hands-on mechanical + electrical assembly; comfortable with hand/power tools; reads drawings/BOMs/runbooks; basic 120V electrical; comfortable working in Linux; able to lift/move equipment.
Networking: experience with network deployment and design as we build out the lab's networking.
Robotics & coding: robotics experience, or a clear, demonstrated interest in robotics; exposure to Python, or to coding/scripting in general.
Ways of working: reliable onsite Redmond presence; safety-first; willing to complete training before unsupervised robot work; runbook/process discipline; comfortable working within established team processes and structure; works independently and escalates when unclear or unsafe; eager to learn.
Education & hands-on background: currently pursuing or completed a degree in EE, robotics, mechatronics, electronics, or a related field, or equivalent hands-on experience (a completed degree is not required); what matters most is hands-on experience over formal credentials: building, wiring, assembling, and troubleshooting real hardware through coursework/projects, labs, internships, robotics teams, or prior work.
Nice to have (a plus): ROS2 camera/sensor calibration CAD / 3D printing / light fabrication fleet/device-management tooling prior automation, lab-ops, or hardware-test experience industrial PCs / edge compute / GPU workstations.
Good fit: You like building real systems, keeping equipment organized, and making a lab dependable for other engineers. Comfortable with physical work, careful documentation, repeatable process, and the fact that safety and structure matter in a robot lab. You take pride and ownership in recognizing that the lab only works if the physical implementation is solid, documented, and maintained.
