SUMMARY OR GENERAL PURPOSE:
Under supervision of the Golf Course Superintendent, the Golf Course Mechanic is responsible for the expert maintenance and repair of all golf course equipment, large and small. Performs a full range of preventive and repair services to include fabrication, welding, reel mower set-up and grinding, diesel engine, gasoline and two-stroke equipment, electrical repairs and other mechanical work as assigned. Performs tune-ups, electrical repairs, major overhauls as well as routine service repair duties to trucks, cars, tractors, golf course specific equipment, etc. Performs other duties as assigned.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The following duties are illustrative only and are not intended to be all inclusive:

• Inspect, diagnose, troubleshoot, maintain and repair mechanical defects in automobiles, heavy equipment, specialized mowing equipment, golf carts, utility trucks, aerators, sweepers, small equipment, and other mechanical equipment used in golf course maintenance work.
• Disassemble engines or motors, and perform general overhauling; install and adjust brakes, batteries, tires, wiring, and glass; repair transmissions, differentials, carburetors, distributors, fuel pumps, steering systems, starters, generators, universal joints, hydraulic systems, high pressure pumps, valves, etc.
• Occasional emergency repairs in or out of the shop; welding and acetylene operations; fabrication and modification of equipment.
• Regular and emergency reel sharpening, overhaul, back lapping, bed knife facing, grinding, daily HOC check and adjustment.
• Perform all functions involved in preventive maintenance program.
• Regularly inspect equipment condition, estimate cost of parts, repairs and preventative maintenance, spot check equipment for performance in the field.
• Responsible for the ordering of repair parts and replacement supplies; perform parts inventory; maintain a complete set of records, files and work orders for all equipment; manage account funds. Explores alternative purchasing options for parts and supplies to efficiently manage expenses.
• May operate more complex equipment in conjunction with training.
• Train employees in proper operation, safety and service of equipment.
• Regulate use of equipment, if needed.
• Responsible for shop area maintenance, safety and cleanliness.
• Perform related work as required and assigned.
• Interacts with internal and external customers in a courteous and respectful manner in all communications and interactions such as proper operation of equipment, requests for equipment repairs, safety guidelines, use of tools and mechanic's bay.
• Works with Superintendent to balance the needs of the golf course with the condition of the equipment. This position generally works a non-traditional schedule. May be required to be available for on-call duty. Weekend work may be required.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the supervision of a superintendent, assistant superintendent or designated supervisor.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Exercises general supervision of personnel as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
KNOWLEDGE: Basic knowledge of safety practices and procedures; working knowledge of light and heavy maintenance equipment and automotive apparatus; theory, care and operation of internal combustion engines; hydraulic systems, transmissions and differentials; electrical motors and vehicles; small engine equipment, battery powered hand-held equipment and other general repair techniques for a wide variety of golf course specific and general machinery and tools.
SKILL: Use of wide variety of equipment repair and diagnostic tools; various types of mechanical repair. Ability to apply mathematical concepts to repairs and maintenance including measurements, basic arithmetic including basic algebra.
ABILITY: Ability to diagnose mechanical troubles and do skilled repair work; prepare estimates of time and materials needed; oversee the work of others; follow written and oral instructions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, other employees and the public.
EVIDENCE OF QUALIFICATIONS:
TRAINING: HS diploma required. ASE certifications, technical trade school, or specialized training preferred.
EXPERIENCE: Three (3) years specialized equipment repair experience repairing and maintaining rotary and reel mowers, transportation equipment, tractors and 3-point attachments, back hoes, skid steers, diesel and gasoline engine, hydraulics, electrical diagnostics and repair, small engine, etc. or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides evidence that the applicant possesses the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the functions of the position.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
May be required to provide own hand tools. Valid Colorado driver's license and a safe driving record are required.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Work requires ability to operate City-owned equipment. Primary work is performed in shop environment, but ability to perform year-round field work in all temperature and weather extremes is required. Environment includes exposure to dust, grease, oils, solvents, fumes and gases. Requires lifting heavy loads over 50 lbs.; pulling, pushing, stooping, reaching with both hands, walking, standing for long periods, crawling, working on back, bending, kneeling, climbing, and climbing on ladders. Requires ability to see and hear well enough to operate machinery safely and work around moving parts and running machines. Frequent exposure to noise levels that may cause distractions. May be exposed to confined work area such as vaults. Required to respond to emergencies during off-duty hours.
INDEPENDENCE OF ACTION:
Work is performed within authorized limits prescribed by the supervisor and/or policy. Exercises independent judgment in selecting and interpreting information, handling deviations from standard methods and resolving problems. Finished work is reviewed for attainment of objectives and adherence to deadlines. Supervisor is available to assist in solving problems.
EQUIPMENT USED:
The ability to properly operate or use the following equipment is necessary for this position: shop and hand tools associated with mechanical repair and maintenance which may include diagnostic equipment, vehicle lifts, acetylene torch, tire changers, welding equipment, grinder, technical grinding unit, electrical motors, wash pad water recycle system, gas and diesel motors, compression tester, multi-meter, specialized golf course equipment tools. Computers to maintain records. Tractors, aerifiers, seeders, sod cutter and other specialty golf course maintenance equipment.
