The City of Salina's Parks & Recreation Department is seeking a Golf Course Superintendent to help keep one of the community's valued recreational spaces welcoming, well-maintained, & ready for public enjoyment. The Golf Course Superintendent plays an important role in preserving a safe, attractive, & enjoyable public environment. The role is well-suited for an experienced golf course or grounds maintenance professional looking for long-term employment with a stable municipal organization & the chance to lead a dedicated team. Our next superintendent is offered opportunities to gain knowledge about Salina's Municipal Golf Course operations, equipment, materials, & tools used to maintain greens, shrubs, trees, lawns, fairways, water systems, & related golf course facilities. Experienced staff support skill development by sharing practical knowledge, reinforcing safety practices, & helping employees apply established standards & procedures in real work situations. The position also strengthens supervisory abilities through assigning work, training employees, evaluating performance, & coordinating the efforts of full-time & seasonal maintenance staff.
Duties: โ€ข Plans, directs, supervises & participates in turf maintenance & construction of fairways, greens, traps, water systems, waterways, & other golf course grounds.
โ€ข Plans for & plants trees; determines strength & mixture of fertilizers & chemicals used on a golf course; applies fungicides, insecticides, herbicides & fertilizers.
โ€ข Maintains & performs repairs to golf course accessory buildings; constructs & maintains cart paths & tee boxes.
โ€ข Inspects all facilities under jurisdiction to determine effectiveness of programs & personnel; acts upon patrol complaints, requests & suggestions.
โ€ข Determines & approves the extent of & participates in repairs needed to maintain equipment in proper operating order; requisitions supplies & equipment; prepares golf course maintenance records.
โ€ข Contacts businesses & contractors about equipment, materials, supplies & services needed.
โ€ข Assists in budgetary preparation & monitoring.
โ€ข Trains employees & evaluates work performance.
โ€ข Prepares routine operational & unit records.
Education: โ€ข High school diploma or G.E.D.
โ€ข Possession of EPA pesticide Applicator's Permit, or ability to acquire permit.
Experience:
โ€ข Four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in golf course & greens maintenance.
โ€ข One (1) year as a lead worker or supervisor.
Requirements: โ€ข Must possess a valid Kansas driver's license.
โ€ข Must live within 40-minute response time.
Work Type:
โ€ข Heavy, exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
โ€ข Frequent amount of walking required.
โ€ข Works inside & outside with adverse conditions possible.
Equipment: โ€ข Aerifiers, backhoes, blueprints, desktop computer (irrigation system), hand tools, pumps, sprayers, tractors, trimmers, trucks, two-way radio, variety of mowers including out-front & gang mowers.
Hours: โ€ข Monday-Friday.
โ€ข 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
โ€ข May include call out or after-hours work.
Pay DOQ EOE:
โ€ข $25.69-41.11/hr.
โ€ข $53,435-85,509/yr.
โ€ข Salary negotiable upon experience.
Paid Time Off: โ€ข 48 hours of vacation available upon hire; additional 48 hours earned during the year (96 hours in first year).
โ€ข 96 hours of sick leave during first year.
