Job description

Title: Assistant Golf Course Superintendent Department: Leisure Services Division: Golf Course

Annual Pay Range: 59,817 - $74,772 (DOE)


GENERAL PURPOSE

Performs a variety of first-line supervisory duties as needed to assist in the planning, organizing, and coordinating the construction, maintenance, and repair of the city golf course, including tees, fairways, rough, greens, and natural environment. Oversees daily operations in the absence of the Course Superintendent.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the general guidance and direction of the Golf Course Superintendent.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Provides general supervision to Irrigation Technician, Maintenance Mechanic, and full-time and part-time Mower Operator/Greens Keeper(s).

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Assists in the implementation and management of project priorities, monitors project timely completion and quality; assists in the design and development of course additions, including putting greens, driving range, greens, holes, etc; directs work crews in the details of assigned projects.

Participates in the selection functions for course personnel; instructs and trains course personnel in efficient and effective operation of course maintenance equipment; assists in evaluating performance; makes recommendations related to personnel actions such as hiring, advancement, promotion, suspension, demotion, or dismissal.

Assists in the preparation of the annual budget recommendations related to course construction, maintenance, repair, and personnel needs; assists in monitoring course expenditures to ensure conformance to established fiscal program.

Participates in the construction of course greens, tees, and fairways; performs daily assessment of condition, health, and playability of the course; supervises and performs the mowing, watering, and maintenance of tees, greens, fairways, and related areas; supervises the planting, fertilizing, and maintenance of turf.

Operates course computerized watering system; assures proper operation of computer equipment; updates software as needed; programs software as needed to activate watering schedules as needed to assure quality play of the course; assures proper regulation of water well and pumping operations; monitors and maintains status of ponds and wetlands; assures proper distribution of water flow according to water rights access and privileges.

Operates maintenance equipment as needed to assure timely completion of projects, i.e., pin placements, mowing of greens, roughs and fairways, raking bunkers, mowing tees, etc.; determines condition and performance of equipment; schedules and performs repair as needed; examines soil and turf samples and tests; performs the application of fertilizer, lime, insecticide, pesticide, herbicide, and fungicide.

Implements and monitors work programs; utilizes experience and agronomic practices to improve and maintain turf and playing condition of course; directs workers engaged in cultivation, grading, seeding, and sodding of course areas.

Inspects turf to designate height and frequency of mowing; determines need for supplemental irrigation to sustain or force growth; tours course to determine work progress and general condition of golf course and related grounds.

Monitors the upkeep and maintenance of equipment such as reel mowers and riding mowers; assures timely changes of gears and bearings, precision grinding of reels and knives, motor tune-ups, ball washer service, tee markers, tee signs, benches, etc.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

1. Education and Experience:


  • A. Graduation from high school; plus two (2) years of specialized training in plant biology, horticulture, agronomy, chemistry, landscape design, or some other related field provided through in-service, professional workshops, or technical college,

AND

  • B.Three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in construction of golf course grounds and maintenance and repair of equipment,

OR

  • C. An equivalent combination of education and experience.

2. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Working knowledge of P.G.A. green specifications and standards; golf course turf management; golf course landscape design; agronomic practices, procedures, and methods related to construction and maintenance of course greens and grounds; herbicides, insecticides, and fungicides typical to greens maintenance; hazards and related safety precautions associated with golf course maintenance and repair. Some knowledge of principles of supervision; budget preparation and fiscal management; interpersonal communication skills and effective public relations; golf rules of play.

Ability to plan, organize, and direct the complex construction and lay out of attractive and competitive golf courses and greens; effectively apply chemicals for the abatement and eradication of noxious weeds and insects; evaluate personnel and program performance without partiality; communicate effectively, verbally and in writing; operate efficiently a variety of golf course maintenance related equipment, i.e., D3/D9 Cat, Mowers, tractors, trenchers, dump trucks, utility vehicles, backhoe, etc.; develop an maintain effective working relationship with supervisors, city officials, subordinates, professionals, and the public.

  1. Special Qualifications:

Must possess a valid Utah State Driver's License.

Must be a licensed applicator of pesticides through the State of Utah.

  1. Work Environment:

Incumbent of the position generally performs in an outdoor setting with daily exposure to changing weather conditions. Tasks require a variety of physical activities, generally involving some muscular strain, such as walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching, and limited lifting, etc. Talking, hearing, and seeing are essential to the performance of the job. Common eye, hand, and finger dexterity exist. Mental application utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability, discriminating thinking, and creative problem solving.


As per Washington City policy and/or procedures, a background check, and drug screening evaluation will be required for potential new hire candidates prior to an offer of employment.
