Responsibilities
About the role:
We are building out the next great business within General Motors, an insurance company that will disrupt the traditional model using our advantages as a subsidiary of the largest US automaker. Our success depends on our ability to make disciplined, principled decisions at scale based on a foundation of rigorous data and machine learning. We will use data science and analytics to leverage our advantages in acquisition and telematics to create an insanely simple insurance product that GM vehicle owners love.
The Technical Principal is a technical thought leader responsible for defining and scaling the data architecture for GM Insurance. This role establishes the standards, patterns, and technical direction needed to deliver trusted data products and scalable self-service, analytics, and AI capabilities across the business.
As GM Insurance grows, this role ensures the organization has the right data foundation to make better decisions, scale AI and machine learning, and enable business-ready self-service analytics across the enterprise.
In this role you will:
  • Defines the target-state data architecture, including how data is transformed, organized into business-ready structures, made available for use, and consumed by analytics, AI, reporting, and business applications

  • Plans, develops, improves, and maintains the data architecture for data warehouse and data marts

  • Enables metric and KPI standardization through semantic modeling, business definitions, and reusable data products

  • Creates shared business context and AI reasoning capabilities through a business ontology

  • Designs and delivers enterprise data products aligned to core business domains

  • Establishes analytics modeling standards that enable self-service analytics and consistent reporting

  • Performs in-depth data analysis and data modeling in support of the target-state architecture

  • Ensures data consistency and accessibility

  • Collaborates with IT and business teams

  • Evaluates and integrates new data management technologies

Qualifications
What makes you an ideal candidate?
  • Proven experience defining and delivering modern enterprise data architecture at scale

  • Hands-on experience in information architecture, data modeling, and data warehousing solutions using normalized, dimensional, and fit-for-purpose modeling approaches

  • Experience enabling business intelligence and self-service analytics through semantic layers, shared metrics, enterprise information models, business ontologies, and business vocabulary standards

  • Experience with major cloud platforms and modern data platforms, with preferred experience in Azure and Databricks

  • Expert SQL skills, with preferred experience in Databricks SQL, query optimization, reusable views, and metric definitions

  • Experience with modern semantic layer technologies such as Databricks Unity Catalog Semantics, dbt Semantic Layer, LookML, or AtScale

  • Preferred familiarity with Databricks capabilities such as SQL Warehouses, Unity Catalog, dashboards, MLflow, Feature Store, and AI/BI capabilities

  • Preferred working knowledge of Python, PySpark, notebooks, jobs, APIs, and metadata automation in a modern cloud data platform

  • Preferred experience with Git, CI/CD, configuration-based deployment, and infrastructure-as-code patterns for managing data platform assets

  • Experience partnering across business, technology, analytics, governance, privacy, and security stakeholders to translate business strategy into governed, reusable data capabilities

  • Ability to guide architecture decisions that balance business value, risk, investment, scalability, data quality, and fit-for-purpose solution design

  • Strong business acumen in the auto insurance industry, with understanding of insurance operations, customer lifecycle, claims, underwriting, pricing, and regulatory considerations

  • Background in regulated or data-sensitive environments

Experience and Education
  • Greater than 10 years of experience in related function required

  • 3-5 years of experience leading through mentorship in related field required

  • 3-5 years of experience leading projects and initiatives through influence required

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required

  • Associate's degree or High School Diploma plus 2 additional years of related experience required

Licenses and Certifications
  • Related certifications and/or licenses required

  • Member of and recommendation by accredited association in related field preferred

The base range for this role is: $115,000 - $213,000
At GM Financial, we strive for transparency in all aspects of our business, including pay equity. This is the GM Financial pay range for this role and job level. The exact salary and compensation will vary based on factors like knowledge, skills, experience, and education.
This role is eligible to participate in a performance-based incentive plan. Full-time employees are eligible to participate in health benefits on day one of employment.
