DO YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES?

The ideal candidate will support the Fire Prevention, Emergency and Security Services department by providing emergency medical and firefighting/fire prevention services, as well as supporting the security functions for the ArcelorMittal Calvert site. Our mission is to proactively prevent injuries, fires, and security incidents through vigilant hazard identification, innovative risk reduction, and active collaboration across all mill functions. We foster a culture of safety where every team member is empowered and accountable, working side by side with operations to integrate prevention and protection into every aspect of mill activity. Through education, engagement, preparedness, and continuous vigilance, we strive to safeguard life, property, and assets, ensuring a safer and more secure workplace for all.

The Basics:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Basic computer skills including MS Office
  • 2 years industrial maintenance work experience or 3 years operational experience in large industrial environments, or working with large industrial equipment or in industrial farming
  • Ability to do the following:
    • Pass fit test and work in SCBA (self-contained breathing apparatus) and structural firefighting gear
    • Attend and complete company-provided training to obtain certifications in assigned industrial fire training and/or NREMT-Basic or Paramedic training within a designated time frame
    • Work in physically demanding adverse environments and perform physical tasks, including but not limited to, lifting and/or moving up to 50 lbs. utilizing proper lifting technique, working at/in elevations, working in extreme temperatures, confined spaces, and various industrial settings
    • Learn and interpret regulatory codes including but not limited to NFPA, OSHA, ANSI, etc. and apply in work setting
    • Operate emergency response vehicles and equipment
    • Learn various emergency reporting software systems
    • Adapt to and prioritize various industrial mill requirements
    • Travel as needed for training
    • Learn incident command principles (ICS/NIMS)
    • Learn industrial atmospheric monitoring equipment
    • Follow directions, process maps, and work instructions
    • Work in team settings
  • Must possess strong situational awareness and decision‑making skills in dynamic emergency situations

  • Candidates certified in, or having experience in, the following will be given preference:
    • Hazardous Materials Response
    • High Angle/Rope Rescue
    • Confined Space Rescue
    • Structural Collapse
    • Trench Rescue
    • Alabama Professional Standards Fire Fighter I and II certification or NFPA 1081 Industrial equivalent
    • Current Nationally Registered or State of Alabama EMT-Basic or Paramedic certification
    • Prior military, firefighting, or EMS

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING

  • Complete training to become certified to do the following:
    • Proactively engage in fire/ injury prevention efforts
    • Drive and operates emergency response vehicles
    • Select proper firefighting tools and equipment to control and extinguish fires
    • Perform search and rescue operations
    • Utilize appropriate safety equipment, to mitigate hazardous materials incidents
    • Perform extrication operations as needed
    • Be responsible for delivering training and emergency drill sessions as assigned by the training division/Shift Manager
  • Pre-plan potential emergency scenarios
  • Participate in and develop risk reduction strategies
  • Perform inspections and preventive maintenance on fire suppression systems
  • Perform various security activities throughout the plant
  • Fulfill the commitment to ensure a safe and healthy work environment

  • Work will be on a rotating 12-hour shift, 4 days on and 4 days off
