Glass Working information

What is glass working?

Glass working is the craft and process of shaping, forming, and manipulating glass to create objects such as art pieces, functional items, or architectural elements. This can involve techniques like blowing, casting, fusing, and lampworking, each of which uses heat to soften the glass for molding. Glass workers require specialized tools and a good understanding of the physical properties of glass. The field includes both traditional, hand-crafted methods and modern, industrial processes. Whether as a hobby or profession, glass working combines artistic creativity with technical skill.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a glass worker?

To thrive as a Glass Worker, you need strong manual dexterity, attention to detail, and a solid understanding of glass properties and safety procedures, often acquired through apprenticeships or vocational training. Familiarity with tools like glassblowing torches, cutting equipment, and kiln operation is typically required. Creativity, problem-solving, and effective teamwork are valuable soft skills for this role. These skills ensure safe, precise, and high-quality creation or repair of glass products, which is essential in both artistic and industrial settings.

What are some common challenges glass workers face when collaborating on large projects?

Glass workers collaborating on large projects often encounter challenges such as precise coordination with team members, managing tight deadlines, and ensuring consistent quality across all pieces. Effective communication is crucial when working with designers, engineers, and other craftspeople to meet exact specifications. Additionally, handling and transporting large or delicate glass components requires careful planning and teamwork to maintain safety and minimize material loss.

What is the difference between Glass Working vs Glass Cutting?

AspectGlass WorkingGlass Cutting
Required SkillsHandling, shaping, and assembling glass componentsMeasuring and cutting glass sheets to specified sizes
Work EnvironmentFactories, workshops, construction sitesGlass shops, manufacturing facilities
CertificationsMay require safety and handling certificationsOften requires precision measurement skills, but fewer certifications

Glass Working involves shaping and assembling glass, while Glass Cutting focuses on measuring and cutting glass sheets. Both roles require safety awareness and technical skills, but Glass Working is broader in scope, often involving multiple processes, whereas Glass Cutting is more specialized in precision cutting tasks.

Do glass workers make good money?

Glass workers typically earn wages that are close to the national average for skilled trades, with median annual salaries around $40,000 to $50,000. Experienced glass workers or those with specialized skills, such as stained glass or industrial glass fabrication, can earn higher wages, especially with certifications and in certain industries. The job often involves physical work in a workshop or construction environment and may require safety training and the use of tools like glass cutters and kilns.

Glass Preparer / Glass Shop Technician
At Endress+Hauser, progress happens by working together. As the global leader in measurement instrumentation, our ~17.000 employees shape the future in the field of process automation. Whether developing and realizing new technology as a team, collaborating to build instrumentation, or strengthening vital relationships with countless global industries, we work to create trusted relationships that help everyone thrive. As a family-owned company, we look beyond short-term moves and work to create a vision that is forward-thinking for our people, our clients, and the world at large.
We are looking for a Glass Preparer / Glass Shop Technician to join our Production Glass Shop team in Anaheim, California. In this hands-on manufacturing role, you will support the production of high-quality pH sensor components by preparing, forming, assembling, and inspecting precision glass parts. This position requires strong attention to detail, manual dexterity, and the ability to work with specialized glassworking equipment in a quality-focused production environment.
What is the role about?
Do you enjoy working with your hands and creating precision components? Are you detail-oriented and committed to maintaining high quality standards? Do you thrive in a manufacturing environment where craftsmanship and technical skill come together?
As a Glass Preparer / Glass Shop Technician, you will be responsible for preparing and processing glass components used in pH sensor manufacturing. Working closely with the Glass Shop team and Production leadership, you will use specialized tools, glassworking equipment, inspection methods, and production systems to ensure components meet required quality, dimensional, and performance standards.
Which tasks will you perform?
You will:
  • Read and interpret work orders, manufacturing procedures, and technical instructions.
  • Pull and prepare glass tubing materials according to production requirements.
  • Cut glass stems to specified dimensions using glass cutting equipment.
  • Set up and operate glass crack-off and cutting machines.
  • Measure and verify dimensions using calipers and other precision measuring tools.
  • Assemble ceramic and glass components for sensor production.
  • Form glass flares and assemblies using glass-working lathes and related equipment.
  • Operate and troubleshoot automatic bulb-blowing machines.
  • Produce glass pH membranes using manual glass blowing and flame-working techniques.
  • Inspect glass components for quality, accuracy, and defects.
  • Record production transactions and completed operations within SAP.
  • Support packaging, labeling, and staging of completed products as needed.
What do we expect from you?
You:
  • Have a high school diploma or GED.
  • Have hands-on experience in glass preparation, glass finishing, glass blowing, precision manufacturing, or a closely related production environment.
  • Prior experience with glassworking lathes, bulb blowing, flame-based glass forming, or similar specialized glass processes is highly preferred.
  • Possess strong mechanical aptitude and the ability to safely perform precision hand work with small glass components.
  • Can safely operate manufacturing equipment and precision measuring instruments.
  • Have experience reading work instructions, drawings, or manufacturing documentation.
  • Demonstrate strong attention to detail and commitment to quality standards.
  • Are comfortable working with repetitive processes while maintaining accuracy.
  • Can identify and communicate basic equipment, quality, or production issues and support troubleshooting activities as needed.
  • Have basic computer skills and are comfortable learning ERP systems such as SAP.
  • Possess strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively within a team environment.
What can you expect from us?
  • Family-owned, highly committed global company with a sustainable vision of the future.
  • Lifelong learning encouraged by versatile training, tuition reimbursement, success coaching, and further education opportunities.
  • Comprehensive benefit package (to include medical, dental, vision) and 401(k) savings with company match.
  • Compensation is competitive and includes bonus opportunities.
  • Work-life balance encouraged through our 10 company-paid holidays, paid time off, paid parental leave, employee assistance programs (financial, mental, and physical health and wellbeing), and employee discounts.
  • Employees work in a safety-first, climate controlled, clean manufacturing facility with utilization of Lean practices and ergonomic workstations to enhance productivity and comfort.
  • Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to lift up to 35 lbs., stand for extended periods, and safely handle production tools, equipment, and glass components.
  • Manual dexterity for handling small components, glass parts, and precision instruments.

The listed salary range for this position is $24 to $30 per hour, but the actual package offered may vary depending on different factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation for this position would include other elements such as an annual nondiscretionary bonus.
