Scope of the role:

This role serves as the Glass Technologist for the Gorilla Glass division, with primary responsibility for raw materials and glass composition technologies supporting both current and next-generation Gorilla Glass products and processes. The position focuses on identifying gaps in raw material, composition, equipment, and process systems, while working cross-functionally with batch, autofill, melting, forming, BOD, Product Engineering, Manufacturing, Commercial Technology, and R&D&E teams to ensure glass compatibility with downstream processing and customer requirements. This individual will provide technical recommendations and help drive the delivery of new glass compositions, equipment, and process systems from R&D through Division Engineering into Manufacturing, while also leveraging materials, melting, forming, and BOD expertise to support cost-effective growth, process optimization, defect reduction, problem resolution, and successful production implementation.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with MCE Division Engineering, Gorilla Glass Plants, MTE and Characterization Sciences to develop, implement and migrate glass measurements and equipment for improve precision, accuracy and reliability for Gorilla Glasses as needed.
  • Work with plant glass technologists to evaluate trends in chemistry, physical property and IOX data across glass compositions and locations, investigating for root cause and then proposing action plans to make improvements where necessary.
  • Use engineering principles and data to provide second level assistance to help solve operational issues related to glass technology and raw materials
  • Support and approve experiments with raw materials and glass compositions
  • Collaborate with internal customers, Development, Research, MCE Division Engineering, Quality, Supply Chain, Mixing, Melting, Forming and Product Engineering for production including new or modified raw materials, raw materials processes and technology
  • Use KT, risk assessment, MEE, DMAIC, Innovation and other tools to deliver results.
  • Provide guidance/training to other personnel on how to perform testing properly
  • Assist in the onboarding, validation and migration of new procedures and gauges through project work and SOP development

Travel Requirements:

Estimate up to 25% (mix of domestic and international). Most domestics trips will be one week or less. International trips will typically be 3 to 4 times per year and 1 to 2 weeks in length but could be higher depending on project workload. 

Hours:


Hours of work/work schedule will vary depending on project timing and requirements: 45 hrs./week plus travel, and periodic evening or morning conference calls. Because of this there will be flexibility in work schedule.

 Required Education:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in glass or chemistry related field (Ceramic, Materials or Chemical Engineering preferred)
  • Master's degree preferred.

Required Years and Experience:

  •  3-5+ years in raw materials, glass/ceramic composition control and material lab environment desired.

Required Skills:

  • Proven analytical and problem-solving skills\
  • Methodical, data-based decision-making skills with the ability to use this data in proactively finding solutions
  • Understanding of basic statistical and data analysis concepts and their application in manufacturing.
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access) Experience with MEE & Six Sigma DMAIC principles
  • Formal K-T problem solving & PPA leadership skills

  • Technical curiosity
  • Strong process management skills, such as rigorous application of documented procedures
  • Lab equipment experience (e.g. XRF, ICP, IOX, FTIR, PSD measurements, etc.)
  • Ability to multitask in a rapid changing environment
  • Environmental hazard awareness with respect to raw materials and glasses.

The range for this position is $95,402.00 - $131,179.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
