Job description

Attalon / Location Overview

Attalon is a leading innovator in advanced optical technologies, serving mission‑critical applications across aerospace, defense, and scientific research. Our dedication to precision engineering, technical excellence, and continuous innovation has established us as a global leader in the design and manufacture of high‑performance optical systems.

Process Development Engineer - CNC

We are seeking a highly skilled Process Development Engineer - CNC to join our Richmond, California team. You will be responsible for developing, optimizing, and supporting CNC programs and machining processes that enable high‑quality, efficient, and cost‑effective manufacturing of glass aerospace components. This role works closely with engineering, production, and quality teams to translate complex design requirements into reliable, scalable machining solutions.

If you’re energized by complex challenges, cross‑functional collaboration, and opportunities to shape manufacturing strategy, this is a role where you can make a significant impact on the development of next‑generation optical technologies.

Responsibilities
  • Create, modify, and optimize CNC programs for 3‑ and 5‑axis milling.
  • Interpret engineering drawings, 3D models, and specifications (including GD&T).
  • Select appropriate tools, speeds/feeds, and work‑holding methods.
  • Develop setup sheets, tool lists, and machining documentation.
  • Run simulations and prove‑outs to validate toolpaths and prevent collisions.
  • Improve machining processes to reduce cycle time, scrap, and tool wear.
  • Support machinists during setups, troubleshooting, and first‑article approvals.
  • Collaborate with engineering to recommend machining‑friendly design changes.
  • Maintain CAD/CAM files, revision control, and programming standards.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives (Lean, 5S, Kaizen, Six Sigma).

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field
  • Minimum 5 years of CNC programming and machining experience
  • Proficient with CAM software (GibbsCAM, Mastercam, Fusion 360, NX, Esprit)
  • Strong understanding of G‑code, M‑code, and CNC machine operation
  • Ability to read mechanical drawings and apply GD&T
  • Knowledge of machining practices, tooling, and materials (glass, metals, composites, plastics)
  • Skilled in troubleshooting machining and programming issues
  • Strong analytical, problem‑solving, communication, and teamwork abilities

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with GibbsCAM
  • Experience with CNC program verification using simulation software (Predator, Vericut, etc.)
  • Experience with multi‑axis machining (4‑axis, 5‑axis).
  • Background in manufacturing engineering or precision machining.
  • Familiarity with ERP/MRP systems.
  • Lean or Six Sigma training.
  • CAD proficiency (SolidWorks, NX, etc.).
  • Experience in aerospace, medical device, automotive, or high‑precision manufacturing.
For California, the base pay range for this role is $91,625–$156,600. This range is provided as a general guideline. Actual compensation will depend on factors such as job responsibilities, relevant experience, education and training, specialized skills, and current market conditions.
