What is a GitHub engineer?

A GitHub Engineer is a software professional who specializes in using GitHub, a popular platform for version control and collaboration, to manage code, streamline development workflows, and support software engineering teams. Their responsibilities often include setting up repositories, managing branches, automating workflows with GitHub Actions, and ensuring code quality through pull requests and code reviews. They may also help teams adopt best practices in source control and integrate GitHub with other tools in the development pipeline. This role requires strong knowledge of Git, continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD), and collaborative software development.

How does a GitHub engineer typically collaborate with development teams to streamline code integration and deployment?

GitHub Engineers work closely with development teams to design and optimize continuous integration and deployment (CI/CD) pipelines, ensuring efficient code reviews, automated testing, and seamless merging of code. They often set best practices for branching strategies, manage repository permissions, and help troubleshoot integration issues. Regular collaboration involves participating in sprint planning, code review sessions, and providing technical guidance on using GitHub features effectively. This role is highly cross-functional, requiring strong communication skills and a proactive approach to supporting developers in maintaining code quality and delivery speed.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a GitHub engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Github Engineer, you need a solid background in software development, version control systems (especially Git), and collaborative coding practices, often supported by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with Github workflows, APIs, CI/CD tools, and scripting languages is typically required, along with certifications like GitHub Certified Developer being advantageous. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills for collaborating across diverse development teams. These skills ensure seamless code collaboration, efficient project management, and the delivery of high-quality software in dynamic environments.

Job description

Role: Front-End React Engineer

Location- Cincinnati, OH

Duration - Long term contract only on w2

About the Role

  • You will design, build, and maintain modern React-based front-end applications that power internal and customer-facing enterprise experiences. You will own the full lifecycle of UI engineering from component architecture and state management through build and deployment automation within a CI/CD-driven environment.
  • You bring strong opinions on front-end architecture, move fast without sacrificing quality, and actively use AI-assisted tooling to improve delivery speed and consistency. You are comfortable leading technical decisions within a Scrum team and mentoring engineers around you.

Responsibilities

  • Architect and own scalable React applications using modern patterns, hooks, and reusable component design.
  • Build responsive, accessible, and performant user interfaces that integrate with internal and third-party APIs.
  • Define and evolve front-end architecture, including routing, state management, form handling, and UI patterns.
  • Partner closely with UX/design and backend teams to translate requirements into high-quality user experiences.
  • Establish and enforce front-end engineering standards for testing, code quality, accessibility, and maintainability.
  • Automate repetitive engineering tasks, including component scaffolding, test generation, API client generation, and documentation, using AI-assisted tooling such as Claude, Copilot, or similar tools.
  • Optimize application performance through code splitting, lazy loading, memoization, caching, and efficient state management.
  • Own build and deployment pipelines for front-end applications using modern CI/CD workflows.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex front-end production issues, including performance, analytics, error tracking, and session diagnostics.
  • Mentor junior engineers and participate actively in code reviews and sprint ceremonies.

Required Skills

  • 5+ years of professional front-end engineering experience with strong React expertise.
  • Deep experience with modern JavaScript/TypeScript, React hooks, component composition, and state management patterns.
  • Strong understanding of state management and async flows using tools such as Redux Toolkit, React Query, Zustand, or similar tools.
  • Proven experience integrating REST APIs and handling authentication flows such as OAuth2 / OpenID Connect in front-end applications.
  • Strong knowledge of HTML5, CSS3, responsive design, and accessibility standards.
  • Experience with front-end testing frameworks such as Jest, React Testing Library, Cypress, or Playwright.
  • Familiarity with modern build tools and package ecosystems such as Vite, Webpack, npm, or pnpm.
  • Git-based workflows in a fast-paced CI/CD environment.
  • Daily use of AI coding assistants such as Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Cursor, or similar tools as part of the workflow.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with enterprise design systems or shared component libraries.
  • Knowledge of micro-frontend architecture or module federation patterns.
  • Experience with Next.js or other React-based SSR frameworks.
  • Hands-on familiarity with observability tools such as Sentry, Datadog RUM, or similar tools.
  • Experience with Storybook or front-end documentation tooling.
  • Experience with Harness, GitHub Actions, or other deployment automation platforms.
  • Azure DevOps experience.

Environment

  • Enterprise tech stack.
  • Front-end applications are built with React and TypeScript and deployed through automated CI/CD pipelines.
  • All code goes through automated quality scans and testing before merge.
  • We actively invest in AI tooling and expect engineers to help shape how we adopt it responsibly and at speed.
