What is a GitHub engineer?

A GitHub Engineer is a software professional who specializes in using GitHub, a popular platform for version control and collaboration, to manage code, streamline development workflows, and support software engineering teams. Their responsibilities often include setting up repositories, managing branches, automating workflows with GitHub Actions, and ensuring code quality through pull requests and code reviews. They may also help teams adopt best practices in source control and integrate GitHub with other tools in the development pipeline. This role requires strong knowledge of Git, continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD), and collaborative software development.

How does a GitHub engineer typically collaborate with development teams to streamline code integration and deployment?

GitHub Engineers work closely with development teams to design and optimize continuous integration and deployment (CI/CD) pipelines, ensuring efficient code reviews, automated testing, and seamless merging of code. They often set best practices for branching strategies, manage repository permissions, and help troubleshoot integration issues. Regular collaboration involves participating in sprint planning, code review sessions, and providing technical guidance on using GitHub features effectively. This role is highly cross-functional, requiring strong communication skills and a proactive approach to supporting developers in maintaining code quality and delivery speed.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a GitHub engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Github Engineer, you need a solid background in software development, version control systems (especially Git), and collaborative coding practices, often supported by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with Github workflows, APIs, CI/CD tools, and scripting languages is typically required, along with certifications like GitHub Certified Developer being advantageous. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills for collaborating across diverse development teams. These skills ensure seamless code collaboration, efficient project management, and the delivery of high-quality software in dynamic environments.

Job Description:

Metas Solutions has an "immediate" opening for a talented DevOps Engineer located in Atlanta, GA and will require on-site support. In this role, your primary focus will be Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment (CI/CD). You'll be the go-to person for the many teams that depend on EDSO for their build and deployment workflows, responding to their needs, unblocking their pipelines, and helping them adopt CI/CD best practices. You'll work closely with platform engineers, product owners, and development teams to automate, optimize, and stabilize the infrastructure supporting DevSecOps initiatives. You'll explore and test best practices around agentic AI and its potential applications within the EDSO platform to enhance automation and efficiency for our teams and clients.

Youโ€™ll spend your days supporting teams with their CI/CD workflows, managing GitHub Actions runners, resolving pipeline issues, and helping maintain the Terraform-managed AWS infrastructure behind our serverless applications. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys handsโ€‘on engineering, process improvement, and collaborative problemโ€‘solving in a fastโ€‘paced, mission-driven environment.

Responsibilities:
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for teams needing help with their CI/CD workflows, responding quickly to requests and unblocking their pipelines.
  • Support the EDSO Product Owner in reducing the EDSO backlog according to priorities and timelines identified in JIRA.
  • Coordinate with the EDSO engineering team to implement technical interfaces between EDSO services and other systems requiring CI/CD integration.
  • Help maintain the EDSO AWS infrastructure for our serverless applications using Terraform, ensuring stable and reliable client utilization.
  • Manage, monitor, and troubleshoot GitHub Actions runners and workflows.
  • Write and maintain Python scripts to automate operational tasks and support CI/CD tooling.
  • Maintain the CI/CD environment to ensure it remains current, secure, and efficient, including proactive updates and issue triage.
  • Collaborate across product, engineering, and operations teams to implement best practices for DevSecOps reliability and automation.
  • Explore, test, and document best practices around agentic AI and its potential applications within the EDSO platform to enhance automation and efficiency.
Qualifications:
  • 4+ years of experience in DevOps or cloud infrastructure engineering
  • Experience building, maintaining, and troubleshooting CI/CD pipelines and workflows, ideally with GitHub Actions
  • Experience implementing and maintaining Infrastructure-as-Code with Terraform
  • Experience designing and deploying AWS serverless architectures
  • Experience with writing Python from scratch - able to design, structure, and build scripts and small tools independently, not just modify existing code. Candidates should be prepared to discuss specific examples of Python they have written
  • Experience with containerization using Docker
  • Experience using LLMs and automation tools to optimize workflows and processes
  • Ability to work onsite in Atlanta, GA.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust or Suitability/Fitness determination based on client requirements
  • Bachelor's degree or commensurate experience
Additional Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience designing and deploying Azure environments and services
  • Experience with monitoring, logging, and alerting tools in cloud environments
  • Experience creating CI/CD pipelines with Azure DevOps
  • Experience using agentic coding tools such as Claude Code, Codex, or GitHub Copilot to build applications or automation, or experience using agents to assist with infrastructure operations tasks
  • Experience troubleshooting production incidents in distributed systems
  • Knowledge of cloud security best practices, identity, and access management
Security, Salary, and Benefits:
  • Must be US Citizen or with the ability to obtain a US Government security clearance (Public Trust 5) within a reasonable period.
  • Market competitive salary, commensurate with experience and education.
  • Comprehensive benefits package available, Medical, Dental, Vision and Life Insurance, Paid Time Off (PTO), 401K with company match, growth, and promotion opportunities.
