GIS Project Coordinators are professionals who manage and oversee geographic information system (GIS) projects. They coordinate teams, set project goals, ensure data accuracy, and handle communication between stakeholders. Their role often involves scheduling, budgeting, quality control, and facilitating the integration of GIS technology into various projects. By bridging technical GIS tasks and project management responsibilities, they help organizations successfully complete spatial data initiatives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a GIS Project Coordinator?

To thrive as a GIS Project Coordinator, you need a solid background in geographic information systems, project management, and spatial data analysis, often supported by a degree in geography, environmental science, or a related field. Familiarity with GIS software like ArcGIS or QGIS, project management tools, and sometimes certifications such as GIS Professional (GISP) are typically required. Strong organizational skills, effective communication, and leadership abilities help you manage cross-functional teams and client relationships. These skills ensure projects are completed accurately, on time, and meet stakeholders’ needs in a technology-driven environment.

Job description

GIS Project Specialist - Enterprise Platform Rollout
Brooklyn, NY: Hybrid (3 days onsite per week)
Compensation: $30 - $35 per hour (DOE)
ABOUT THE ROLE
Our client is seeking an organized and communicative GIS Project Specialist to support the Phase 3 go-live of an enterprise geospatial platform rollout within a large utility environment. This associate-level, hybrid role is business-facing and project-oriented, requiring the ability to manage workstreams independently with minimal day-to-day direction. The specialist will play a key role in project and change management, user readiness, and functional testing, while collaborating with cross-functional teams to ensure successful platform adoption. The position also involves developing training materials, serving as a liaison between technical and business stakeholders, and ensuring data accuracy within GIS databases. Experience with GIS platforms is a plus, but strong project and change management skills are the priority. A background in the utility industry and a relevant bachelor's degree are preferred.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
  • Support Phase 3 go-live activities, including end user readiness, functional testing, and UAT coordination
  • Work alongside the change management team to ensure smooth adoption across business units
  • Develop and maintain job aids, training materials, and user-facing documentation
  • Serve as a liaison between technical teams and business stakeholders
  • Track open items, escalate blockers, and keep workstreams moving toward milestone completion
  • Maintain and update GIS databases, ensuring data accuracy, integrity, and consistency across systems
  • Perform spatial analysis and interpret geospatial data to support business and operational decision-making
  • Produce maps, dashboards, and visual reports for internal stakeholders and project teams
  • Assist with data migration, layer configuration, and platform administration tasks during rollout phases
  • Support quality control reviews of GIS data submitted by internal teams or third-party vendors
  • Coordinate with engineering, operations, and IT teams to gather requirements and translate them into GIS workflows
  • Document GIS processes, data standards, and system configurations for ongoing reference
  • Assist with any ad hoc support needs as the platform transitions to steady state
WHAT YOU BRING
  • 1-3 years of experience in project coordination, GIS analysis, or a related business/technical role
  • Familiarity with GIS platforms (ArcGIS, ESRI) preferred
  • Utility industry background a plus
  • Strong communication skills, ability to manage workstreams independently, and comfort managing up
  • Experience working in a fast-paced enterprise environment with multiple stakeholders
  • Bachelor's degree in GIS, Geography, Urban Planning, Information Systems, or related field preferred
