Description

The GIS Technician duties involve collecting, digitizing, and recording GPS coordinates and field measurements of the City's water and sewer features; designs, plots, and publishes digital maps for use with mobile computers; maintains integrity of GIS files and assists staff, consultants, and customers in identifying and mapping water and sewer infrastructure; maintains permanent records, files, drawings, and the Utilities Department map room; occasionally performs utilities plan reviews to ensure engineers and customers comply with City Standard Specifications for Water and Sewer Construction. The employee must have a working knowledge of GIS equipment and software.

Collects field data using global positioning system (GPS) hardware and software in order to locate and map utility features.

Maintains and edits the Utilities Department GIS database by entering and updating water and sewer infrastructure.

Assist in the review of plans and specifications for new city water mains, sewer mains and public works facilities; assist in the review of plans for city utility relocation and Department of Transportation projects. 

When required attends First Step and Plan Review meetings to assist and inform the public or utility conflicts.

Collect, sort, and organize plats, As-builts, construction plans, and Geographical Information Systems maps for the Utilities Department in both digital and paper format. Record collection of the Utilities Department map room. 

Assists in evaluating and planning existing and proposed water and sewer system components.

Prepares a variety of regular and special reports. 

Performs related duties.

Requirements

Knowledge of GPS principles and practices.

Knowledge of GIS (Geographic Information System) database management principles.

Knowledge of work safety principles and practices.

 Knowledge of basic principles, practices, methods and equipment used in the construction, installation, maintenance of water transmission and distribution systems, sewer and water collection systems and related facilities. 

Knowledge of department and city policies and procedures, and federal, state, and local laws and regulations.

Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs.

Skill in the use of a variety of job-specific software programs.

Skill in the collection of field data.

Skill in preparing written reports and technical maps and drawings.

Skill in planning, organization, and decision making.

Skill in oral and written communication.

Associate's Degree with courses in GIS, geography, engineering or related field

Proficient in the use of GIS data translation and manipulation software and GPS equipment

Candidates must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, and have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external customers.

Excellent computer skills in GPS Pathfinder, ArcGIS and TerraSync software.

Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
