What is a GIS civil engineer?

GIS Civil Engineers are professionals who use Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology to plan, design, and manage civil engineering projects. They integrate spatial data with engineering principles to analyze locations, map infrastructure, and support decision-making in areas such as transportation, water resources, and urban development. Their expertise helps improve project efficiency, accuracy, and sustainability by providing detailed geographic insights throughout the engineering process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a GIS civil engineer?

To thrive as a GIS Civil Engineer, you need a solid background in civil engineering principles, GIS concepts, and spatial data analysis, generally supported by a relevant engineering degree and GIS coursework or certification. Proficiency in GIS software such as ArcGIS or QGIS, CAD systems, and data management tools is essential. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and present geospatial findings clearly. These skills are crucial for designing, analyzing, and managing infrastructure projects that rely on accurate spatial data for effective planning and decision-making.

How do GIS civil engineers typically collaborate with other departments on large infrastructure projects?

GIS Civil Engineers often work closely with surveyors, urban planners, environmental scientists, and construction managers to ensure that spatial data is accurately integrated into project planning and execution. They are responsible for creating and managing geospatial databases, producing detailed maps, and analyzing data to support design decisions. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as GIS Civil Engineers must interpret technical requirements from different stakeholders and deliver actionable insights that guide project development. Regular meetings, data-sharing protocols, and collaborative platforms are commonly used to streamline this cross-disciplinary cooperation.

What is the difference between Gis Civil Engineering vs Geotechnical Engineering?

AspectGis Civil EngineeringGeotechnical Engineering
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Civil Engineering, GIS certificationsBachelor's in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering, Geotechnical certifications
Work EnvironmentField surveys, GIS data analysis, mapping projectsSoil testing, foundation design, site investigations
Industry UsageUrban planning, infrastructure development, environmental managementFoundation design, slope stability, underground construction

Gis Civil Engineering focuses on spatial data analysis, mapping, and GIS technology applications in civil projects. In contrast, Geotechnical Engineering emphasizes soil and subsurface analysis to ensure structural stability. Both roles require civil engineering backgrounds but serve different specialized functions within the industry.

Job description

Talbert, Bright & Ellington (TBE) is seeking highly motivated Civil Engineering Interns with a passion for aviation and infrastructure development. This internship provides hands-on experience working on airport planning, design, and construction projects. The intern will support engineering staff in technical design work, field observations, project research, and preparation of plans and reports for aviation-related projects.
Opportunities available in Miami, FL. Internships are available for the Summer 2027 term.
  • Assist engineers with the design and preparation of airfield plans, drawings, and technical documents (e.g., runways, taxiways, aprons, grading, drainage, utilities).
  • Utilize AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and other design tools to support project development.
  • Conduct basic engineering calculations such as pavement geometry, grading, and stormwater flow estimates.
  • Shadowing airfield inspections, construction observation, and data collection under supervision.
  • Assist in preparing engineering reports, design narratives, cost estimates, and quantity takeoffs.
  • Perform research related to FAA design standards, regulations, and airport planning requirements.
  • Help organize project documentation, prepare exhibits, and contribute to project presentations.
  • Collaborate with engineers, planners, and project managers to meet project deadlines and maintain high-quality deliverables.
Required
  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related field.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Willingness to work in-person

Preferred
  • Demonstrated interest in aviation, airports, or transportation engineering.
  • Experience with Civil 3D, GIS, Bluebeam, or other engineering tools.
  • Knowledge of FAA Advisory Circulars and airport design standards.
  • Previous internship or project experience in civil engineering, transportation, or infrastructure.
  • Basic understanding of civil engineering concepts, especially site development, grading, drainage, or transportation.
  • Hands-on experience with real aviation engineering projects.
  • Mentorship and guidance from experienced airport engineers and project managers.
  • Exposure to FAA standards, airport design processes, and airfield construction practices.
  • Supportive and collaborative team environment.
  • Opportunity to build practical skills that support future full-time roles at TBE.
